This position is integral to the Blue Origin Engines division, which is dedicated to the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of advanced engines and propulsion systems. As a key member of our dedicated team of engineers and technicians, you will play a vital role in the development and delivery of engine systems tailored to meet diverse customer requirements. Your responsibilities will encompass various phases of engine development, including the formulation and breakdown of requirements, technical trade studies, risk management, verification planning, and execution, along with numerous other systems engineering tasks. This role demands a comprehensive application of advanced systems engineering principles, theories, and concepts, as well as a solid grasp of related disciplines. You will assist the Engines team in coordination and planning while engaging in process enhancement initiatives. Your advocacy for systems engineering and integration practices will span across various fields and teams, focusing on system analysis, design, and integrated testing. Your contributions will significantly influence the future of space travel and advance our mission of establishing a pathway to space through reusable rockets.

In this role, you will engage with a broad spectrum of liquid rocket engine technologies, ranging from monopropellant in-space thrusters to reusable liquid natural gas (LNG) staged combustion engines. Systems engineers are tasked with comprehending these engines and making crucial technical decisions that will determine the success of each program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide system design and development throughout all stages of the development lifecycle, from requirements capture and flow-down to preliminary design, critical design, product realization, design verification testing, system integration, qualification, certification, and delivery.
  • Develop, manage, and allocate requirements and interfaces, ensuring accurate linkage of requirements.
  • Implement systems engineering activities in alignment with established systems engineering standards and practices.
  • Support gated reviews effectively.
  • Develop and refine Concept of Operations documents.
  • Ensure consistent System Safety products for our engines, identifying and addressing any gaps in analysis performed by subsystem engineers.
  • Review verification records (test plans, test reports, analysis reports, inspection reports, etc.) to ensure appropriate rigor.
  • Ensure all system aspects are functioning to the correct configuration, including drawings, interface control documents, and design description documents.
  • Participate in specialty engineering integration, analysis, and verification concerning operability, reliability, maintainability, and supportability.
  • Negotiate between various and sometimes conflicting interests to optimize the system as a whole.
  • Collaborate with launch vehicle customers and test sites to create interface definition and design specification documents from engineering documentation. Address all customer inquiries regarding vehicle operability throughout all lifecycle phases of design, development, testing, and launch.
  • Communicate development status, risks, and challenges effectively.
  • Track, evaluate, and report on system metrics.
  • Support engine-level trade studies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in system development and integration.
  • Familiarity with current systems engineering and integration tools and methodologies, particularly in safety-critical environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in teams, demonstrating execution and coordination capabilities.
  • Proven ability to lead teams through direct authority or influence.
  • Experience with systems engineering tools such as DOORS, DNG, Jama, or similar.
  • Proficiency with Atlassian collaboration tools like Jira and Confluence.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with liquid rocket engines or propulsion systems.
  • Experience in reliability, maintainability, and supportability analysis and execution.
  • Familiarity with System Safety analysis, including Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Functional Hazard Analysis.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in configuration management.
  • Experience with failure investigations.
  • Experience supporting proposals.
