Job Overview

UPMC Rheumatology is seeking a part-time Medical Assistant to support their operations. This role entails a commitment of at least 24 hours per week during standard daytime hours, Monday through Friday, with no evening or weekend shifts required. The primary focus of this position is to assist in patient management, including taking vital signs, reviewing medications, scheduling follow-up visits, and providing essential clinical support to healthcare providers.

Objective:
To facilitate physicians in various patient care activities, encompassing clerical, environmental, and organizational duties while ensuring a high level of patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the transmission of patient medical records in compliance with HIPAA and other relevant regulations.
  • Gather lab and imaging reports, hospital documentation, and referral details. Complete necessary forms and requisitions, schedule appointments, verify insurance coverage, and maintain accurate patient demographics. Organize and prepare medical charts for proper filing.
  • Prepare examination rooms and set up medical instruments and equipment according to established protocols. Ensure cleanliness of exam and procedure areas between patient visits to uphold infection control standards. Maintain inventory of medical supplies and restock as needed.
  • Coordinate patient flow by checking schedules and escorting patients to exam rooms. Assist patients with mobility, dressing, and specimen collection, as well as gathering patient history and vital signs.
  • Respond to phone inquiries and provide relevant information, including patient education as directed.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests, EKGs, and assist with clinical procedures under the supervision of physicians. Document all patient interactions and information accurately in medical records.
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements from agencies such as OSHA and CLIA, ensuring confidentiality of medical records and compliance with UPMC Health System policies.
  • Under physician supervision, administer injectable medications and vaccines when necessary.
High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory. Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with medical terminology, examination protocols, and treatment room responsibilities are essential.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR certification is required based on AHA standards, which includes both theoretical and practical components within the initial period of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34 Clearance
