Job Summary

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Early Childhood Educator to join our team as a Head Start Teacher. This is a full-time, 200-day calendar position, responsible for planning, implementing, and supervising all classroom activities for preschool-aged children.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Classroom Management: Implement educational programming within the program philosophy and under all Office of Head Start Performance Standards for early childhood accreditation and licensing requirements to support the social/emotional (mental health) and developmental needs of each child.
  2. Child Development: Demonstrate and teach child development to parents, volunteers, and staff, and intentionally apply principles to programming.
  3. Classroom Environment: Plan and maintain an integrated classroom environment and materials in response to the enrolled children and ensure organization, cleanliness, and safety in all classrooms.
  4. Assessment and Planning: Analyze observations and assessments to plan for each child.
  5. Individual Learning Plans: Write individual learning plan (ILP) for each child based on observational notes, the developmental continuum, and parent input (include five objectives: social-emotional, first language and literacy, second language and literacy, cognitive, and physical development).
  6. Communication: Use developmentally appropriate means of communicating with the children.
  7. Maintenance: Assist with the maintenance of a clean, healthy, and safe environment.
Requirements
  1. Education: B.A. or B.S. in Early Childhood Education/equivalent degree with experience teaching preschool-aged children preferred; OR B.A./B.S. in a related field including 30 ECE credits with experience teaching preschool-aged children required; OR B.A./B.S. in Elementary Education and 18 ECE credits with experience teaching preschool-aged children required; OR B.A. /B.S. with ECE Certification with experience teaching preschool-aged children required.
  2. Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge and skills in the field of early childhood development.
  3. Regulations: Knowledge of Office of Head Start Performance Standards of Early Childhood.
  4. Community Resources: Knowledge of various service resources in the community.
  5. Child Abuse and Neglect: Knowledge of the state and federal regulations pertaining to child abuse and neglect and childcare licensing requirements.
  6. Cultural Competence: Knowledge of local resources, languages, and customs.

  2. Sitting and Lifting: Sitting for an extended period of time and lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling 50 pounds.
  3. Repetitive Movements: Ability to kneel, crouch, bend, and reach to retrieve and handle teaching materials and supplies.
  4. Communication: Ability to speak clearly and distinctly when communicating with limited English-speaking customers.
  5. Hearing and Vision: Hearing clearly and adequate vision to perform duties.
