Principal accountabilities include:
Responsible to identify, design, and direct microbiology studies to support the needs of all business segments.
Coordinates day to day laboratory workflow of the Global Microbiology Resource Center and ensures sufficient resource coverage and performance to meet scheduled turnaround times of microbiology research for internal customers.
Leads and fosters motivation of the Microbiology Resource Center R&D team and provides performance evaluations for direct reporting team members.
Designs and implements both individual and team microbiological research to provide expert technical consultation in support of microbial control strategies across all business segments.
Leads the team to design new and improves existing microbiology test methods for evaluating efficacy of microbial control technologies and strategies across all business segments.
Reviews data within the microbiology laboratory reports of Global Microbiology Resource Center team members to ensure quality, accuracy, and to provide appropriate recommendations for internal customers within agreed time frames.
Leads the Microbiology Services and Applications teams with direct responsibility for all aspects of microbiology laboratory operations.
Supports initiative to implement microbial control strategies within manufacturing environments; periodically supports manufacturing audit requirements; serves as an expert consultant on existing microbiological quality policies, guidelines and SOPs and identifies additional quality policies, guidelines, and SOPs to be developed or revised.
Ensure adherence to housekeeping, safety, biosafety, ISO, and regulatory requirements within the Global Microbiology Resource Center’s BSL-2 Laboratory Operations
Assists in leading budget requirements and microbiology laboratory capital purchases.
Responsible for training, developing, mentoring, and evaluating new and existing employees.
Provides Management both formal and informal updates.
FORMAL EDUCATION: Required:• Bachelors Degree in Microbiology, or other closely related biological degree
Preferred:• Masters in Microbiology or closely related biological sciences with a focus on Microbiology studies.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:Required:• 3 years of supervisory or project management experience in R&D• Solid knowledge of Industrial Microbiology research, with 3 years research experience in disinfectants, biocides, preservatives, or other microbial control areas. • Strong knowledge base of preservation strategies for consumer, household, or institutional products. • Strong leadership skills and in-depth microbiology knowledge to lead a research team and conduct individual microbiology strategy related project with a high level of quality and timeliness.• Knowledge of biohazard regulations in the proper and safe handling and transport of materials containing virulent and pathogenic disease agents and toxicants relevant to a BSL-2 Laboratory.• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivated, adaptable, and a positive attitude. • Skilled in writing microbiology test methods, project plans, and technical reports.• Proven ability to lead and develop a team.• Proven effective communication with cross functional stakeholders in high stakes situations.• Proven problem solving and decision-making skills and abilities.
Preferred:• Proficient knowledge of the industrial biocide, mildewcide, algaecide, and preservation market• Preferred knowledge of biofilm development and strategies for removal and/or prevention of biofilm within industrial processes. • Demonstrated knowledge of paint/coatings chemistry, polymer chemistry, and/or coating formulation, production, and field failure analysis experience.
TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:Required:• In depth knowledge of microbiology laboratory equipment, along with ability to ensure the microbiology team is trained to operate equipment, conduct equipment troubleshooting (as applicable), apply process improvements, and maintain excellent working knowledge of microbiology laboratory equipment.• Proficient in leading a group of microbiologists to conduct aseptic laboratory testing methodologies for evaluation of raw materials, finished products, and/or experimental formulations using standardized microbiological methods for in-can and dry-film preservative efficacy challenge testing, aerobic and anaerobic microbial content testing; supporting environmental monitoring of manufacturing environments; conducting isolation of fungal and bacterial cultures, gram stains, as well as microbial identifications - including bacterial, mold, and yeast, through microscopic examination, genotyping, MALDI-TOF and/or other definitive means• Designs, initiates, executes, and leads complex experimental microbiology projects to develop methods for a broader understanding of microbiological susceptibility of raw materials and the relationship between microbial contamination of latex paint formulations; expands on the understanding of microbial growth rates, nutrient requirements, nutrient limitations, and inhibiting characteristics of existing spoilage organisms as it relates to both dry-film and in-can preservation.• Excellent written & oral communication and interpersonal skills, good organizational and planning abilities, and a high level of initiative.• Proficiency to explain complex ideas at a level appropriate to the audience that may be in a group setting and with a variety of cultural backgrounds by interacting with members of all internal departments, management, plants, and technical resources. Gives internal, external, quarterly, data, impromptu, and stage-gate presentations. Leads project related meetings, team meetings, and weekly meetings and attends team and update meetings.• Working knowledge of basic statistical concepts with applications to microbiological problem-solving.• Strong ability to provide effective mentoring and coaching of employees.• Possesses strong decision-making ability through utilization of effective data analysis.• Ability to utilize standard software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, along with working knowledge of advanced applications such as statistical software, with a demonstration to acquire skills to utilized enterprise software applications.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:20%
Upon completion of construction, the individual selected for this role will primarily work at the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio. Construction is expected to be complete in Q4 2024. Until then, the role will be based at Breen Technology Center, located at 601 Canal Road, Cleveland, OH 44113.
