Amherst Campus
Full Time
JR5653
Amherst has taken a leadership role among highly selective liberal arts colleges and universities in successfully diversifying the racial, socio-economic, and geographic profile of its student body. The College is similarly committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration and staff.
Job Description:
Amherst College is seeking a dynamic and experienced Program and Building Director to manage the successful launch and ongoing operations of our new Student Center and Dining Commons (SCDC). The Program and Building Director is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $115,000 per year - commensurate with experience.
The new SCDC, scheduled for opening in August 2026, will become the signature space on campus essential to supporting and sustaining a vibrant student experience in ways that go beyond the classroom, encompassing the campus' main dining facility, recreational areas, event spaces and meeting rooms.
The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in the center's successful launch and continued operation, blending strategic oversight with hands-on management.
The Director will be responsible for both ensuring a smooth transition from construction completion to operational readiness and, subsequently, overseeing the ongoing operations of the building in close coordination with Student Affairs, Dining Services, Campus Operations, and Conferences and Special Events. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in facilities management, student engagement, and hospitality and a commitment to ensuring the SCDC serves as an inclusive and vibrant gathering space for the campus community.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-opening Planning & Coordination
- Take the lead role with the SCDC "operations" group to establish and oversee the successful execution of a project plan outlining key milestones, tasks and responsibilities.
- Coordinate and manage with Student Affairs, Dining Services, and Campus Operations the transition and move of offices, programs, student organizations, facilities, etc. from their current locations to the SCDC.
- Establish policies and procedures related to cleaning, security, emergency protocols, loading dock access and maintenance.
- Establish policies for space reservation.
- Partner with IT on integration of technology with existing campus technology and establish protocols for technology maintenance.
- Be an active participant in developing communications and marketing plans for the new building.
- Organize a grand opening and ongoing SCDC specific events in close partnership with key campus partners.
Building Operations & Management:
- Oversee the daily operations of the Student Center, ensuring the building is safe, clean and welcoming.
- Establish close working relationships with Student Affairs and Dining Services with clear delineation of responsibilities.
- Coordinate with facilities and campus police on maintenance, custodial, and physical security to maintain a high standard of facility care.
- Manage building reservations and space usage, balancing the needs of different student organizations, staff, faculty, and external guests.
- Assist in the development and management of the budget for the Student Center, ensuring cost efficiency and alignment with the College's financial goals.
- Conduct regular safety checks and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Foster an inclusive, welcoming environment that encourages student involvement and supports diverse communities.
- Lead and mentor a team of student staff, providing training and professional development opportunities.
- Serve as a liaison between students, staff, faculty, and administration to enhance campus life and promote the center as a community hub.
Policy Development & Implementation:
- Establish and enforce policies related to the use of the student center, including space reservations, conduct, and safety protocols.
- Ensure compliance with college policies, state regulations, and health and safety standards.
Event Coordination:
- Coordinate closely with campus partners and the events management team on a range of events and programs, including large-scale campus events like family weekend, homecoming, commencement, etc.
Collaboration & Community Building:
- Serve as a campus leader and partners with Student Affairs leadership to foster student development, promote wellbeing, and facilitate campus engagement through the use of the SCDC.
- Build relationships with external community partners and vendors to support the college's goals of inclusivity and community outreach.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives related to student life, wellness, and co-curricular engagement.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in student affairs, facilities management, or dining/hospitality leadership, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Proven ability to manage a complex, multi-use facility.
- Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and promoting inclusive environments.
- Knowledge of dining service operations and event planning.
- Project management experience preferred.
