Work Location

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday. There will be occasional travel for industry events and field site visits.

Primary Responsibilities

Working with Technicians and Project Engineers, the Engineer will be expected to design, setup, and execute experimental test programs, contribute to analytical and simulation-based studies of low-carbon energy systems, and maintain strong communication with Project Managers, internal stakeholders, and project partners and sponsors. The Engineer is expected to take a systematic approach to handle multiple assignments, understand individual project goals and develop new competency areas as required to succeed in each project cycle. In this role, you will also:

  • Design, build, and commission experimental apparatuses intended to investigate the impacts and optimized use of low-carbon fuels, including hydrogen, with advanced combustion or other energy conversion systems.
  • Effectively direct and collaborate with technician and project engineering staff, including the development and maintenance of experimental documentation, including: mechanical and electrical drawings, software flow diagrams, standard operating procedures, and job safety analyses.
  • Execute experimental and field investigations of low-carbon energy or renewable energy systems, at bench-scale or full system-scale, while meeting project timelines within budget, and complying with all safety protocols.
  • Be responsible for the specification installation, and calibration of instrumentation, in addition to the installation and programming of data acquisition and control systems.
  • Perform basic thermodynamic, fluid dynamic, and heat transfer calculations.
  • Analyze data and prepare project reporting for internal and external use.
  • Potential for travel for industry events, field site visits, or pilot implementations
  • Demonstrate technical expertise with strong written and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate that internal and external customers are a high priority.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Strong fundamental knowledge in areas such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, energy conversion, combustion, and psychometrics
  • Fundamental understanding of system design, analytical modeling, experimental design, instrumentation, and data acquisition.
  • Knowledge of building energy systems (HVAC, water heating, electrical, building envelope) and related codes & standards
  • Demonstrated hands-on skills in a laboratory or field environment, with a focus on residential and commercial HVAC and water heating systems, and/or renewable energy systems
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills
  • Ability to convey information to both technical and general audiences
  • Ability to work effectively in small teams and independently
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline; Relevant Industry Certifications are a plus (Licensed Professional Engineer, LEED AP, CEM, etc.)
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience or an advanced degree in engineering with 3+ years of relevant experience is highly desired, especially in the field of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R), water heating, or appliances.
  • Experience with instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems specifications (e.g., National Instruments (NI) hardware and software, Campbell Scientific), programming experience is a plus.
  • Prior industry/academic laboratory research experience.
  • Experience with combustion, hydrogen research, and low carbon fuels are a plus.
  • Experience identifying new technical and/or business areas of activity is a plus.
  • Experience in laboratory development testing of residential and commercial appliances is a plus.
  • Familiarity with standard tools (drills and pipe wrenches), plumbing, electrical is a plus.
