Job Title: School Nurse
Reports To: District Nurse and Director of Special Services
Site: All sites within Shawnee Public Schools

Qualifications
Credentials: Valid registered nurse license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education; CPR
certification (Health Care Provider - all ages); School Nurse Certification, Driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (B.S.N.)

Training or Experience Required: 3 years as a registered nurse in various areas: Community/Public Health Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Emergency Room Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Health Education, School Nurse experience preferred.

Job Summary: Performs skilled/professional level tasks under limited supervision to promote, improve and maintain the health of students. The school nurse serves as a resource person in matters of health and functions as an integral part of the school staff. Contribute to 504, IEP to create health plan of students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Communication Skills (oral, written, or business): Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries.
  2. Includes filling out forms, instructions, and writing/printing legibly.
  3. Knowledge of grammatical structure, vocabulary for preparing correspondence from rough draft or proofing of completed material.
  4. Communicates in clear, grammatically correct English, computer literacy.
  5. Regular contact by telephone or in-person with the public to determine actual information needed.
  6. Job requires interpreting and translating facts and information, explaining situations and issues to persons and advising them of alternative courses of action.
Essential Job Functions: (Performance Responsibilities):
  1. Prepares and maintains student health records.
  2. Participates in billing procedures when applicable.
  3. Monitors the school immunization program.
  4. Functions within state and district policies in providing health care to children with special needs and at-risk students.
  5. Plans and conducts school health and screening programs of immunization, physical examinations, sight, hearing, dental, and others as necessary. Provides follow through for identified health needs.
  6. Consults regarding or administers emergency care for injury or sudden illness.
  7. Promotes sanitary conditions within the schools.
  8. Maintains a school clinic that is conducive to good health practices.
  9. Serves as a resource health professional to students and staff.
  10. Participates with school personnel at team meetings and planning sessions.
  11. Provides health education, guidance, counseling and referrals for students.
  12. Attends professional meetings, in-services and workshops.
  13. Performs other health related duties, or tasks as assigned.

Other Performance Measures:
  1. Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills to resolve problems and provide information as requested.
  2. Requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to self or to students, inclusive of the District Exposure Control Plan for Blood Borne Pathogens.
  3. Requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns.
  4. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving are important to the success of the position.
  5. Able to cooperate with other staff members and have a positive attitude towards staff, students, and the public to enhance the District's goals.

Supervision exercised: Responsible for staff who provide services for special needs students.

Complies with Shawnee's Mission Statement in which students are to be provided with skills, knowledge and attitudes to become lifelong learners, complex thinkers, and responsible citizens in an ever-changing global society.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions: Other than those physical/mental requirements included within the essential functions: Must be able to communicate on the telephone. Must be able to get around the various sites.

Terms Of Employment: Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. (182-day contract)

  5. Maintains accurate medication logs detailing medication on hand, and dates/times of administration to students.
  6. Monitors the school immunization program and works with parents to maintain compliance for all students.
  7. Functions within federal, state, and district policies in providing health care to children with special needs and at-risk students.
  8. Maintains compliance with TEAM Clinic training and equipment.
  9. Documents food allergies and maintains individual student files.
  10. Plans and conducts school health and screening programs of immunization, physical examinations, sight, hearing, dental, and others as necessary. Provides follow through for identified health needs.
