The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Clinical Services Program's primary mission is to perform sequential studies using samples obtained from patients with cancer, AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease, or other diseases associated with immunologic dysfunction, as well as to monitor viral load in patients with HIV.
The position will support operations in DCR-supported Laboratories in the US, West Africa, Indonesia, and Mexico. Position may travel up to 70% domestically and internationally.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provides operational support to DCR designated high-profile clinical research laboratories in Indonesia, Mexico, West Africa, US, and other countries as assigned
- Works with laboratory staff to ensure that laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and in working order
- Skill in calibrating and operating sophisticated laboratory instruments
- Assists in standard operating procedure development and documentation for assay validation and verification
- Orients and trains professional staff and others on the methods and procedures used in the laboratory
- Participates in the development of standard operating procedures for overall laboratory operations and study-specific operations
- Assists with activities of biorepositories including freezer systems and inventory management
- Coordinates and helps with management of biological shipments
- Develops lists of reagents and consumables for assays and protocols
- Resolve testing back log with EIA for HBV testing
- ELLA: CRP and IL-6 testing
- Work with staff on sample inventory and processes for sample aliquoting/biobanking
- Help HONOR staff and the PREVAIL Clin Lab Manager to discuss day-to-day activities and schedules
- Potential assistance with move of the Biorepository from LIBR to JFK
- Potential assistance to help with InVITE shipments
- Depending on study needs, may be asked to help with verification SOPs and training, maintenance of clinical laboratories
- Potential help with biorepository and sample shipments
- May be asked to travel to Tapachula, Mexico to assess clinical laboratories
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of Bachelor's degree in biomedical research/biology/microbiology from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical laboratory
- Must be detail oriented. Possesses strong verbal communication, writing and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
- Ability to work well under pressure, apply technical expertise, and make sound decisions
- Ability to work effectively with others to ensure the successful and timely completion of the research goals of the organization
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt in a changing environment
- Ability to work independently and as a team member with consistent ability to take initiative and make an active contribution to the team's performance
- Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures for clinical research laboratories
- Proficiency in Windows® and Microsoft® Office Suite including Word®, Excel®, PowerPoint®, and Outlook®
- Must be willing and able to travel internationally often for an extended period of time
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- Experience working in a CLIA certified laboratory or clinical hospital laboratory
- Ability to work in a clinical laboratory setting both independently and within a team of technical specialists and project leaders
- Experience working in international laboratories
- Experience working in resource limited settings
- Ability to apply working knowledge of clinical research relative to timetables to assess overall project timeliness and risks
- This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations
