Senior Accountant Department: Finance Classification: Exempt Reports to: Director of Finance Status: Full-time Location: Anchorage Position Summary: The Senior Accountant is responsible all aspects of full-cycle month-end closing and acts as the backup for accounts payable and payroll processing. Duties include preparing and posting journal entries, cash disbursements, cash receipts, bank reconciliations, preparation of grant reporting and balance sheet reconciliations. The Senior Accountant must work independently and provide support to the Director of Finance. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or similar fields. Possession of a current State of Alaska Driving License and maintenance of a clean driving record. Ability to clear and maintain stringent federal, state and local background clearances. Minimum Experience Four years of accounting experience in a non-profit or public sector organization, or public accounting experience auditing nonprofit or public sector organizations. Proficient use of computers and standard office equipment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and the ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines is required. Essential Functions: Grant Compliance Prepare all required monthly, quarterly, and annual financial grant reports in compliance with the grant reporting requirements and provide to the Director of Finance for review. During review of cash disbursements process, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local grant allowable costs requirements. Financial Reporting, Recordkeeping, and Compliance Maintain chart of accounts in collaboration with the Director of Finance, for efficiency in financial reporting in accordance with GAAP specific to non-profit organizations and for grant reporting requirements. Coordinate with the Director of Finance in maintaining efficient and effective internal controls and segregation of duties to meet requirements for annual audited financial statements, Federal Single Audit, State Single Audit, and preparation of 990 tax return. Reconcile all balance sheet accounts throughout the year and at year-end for the audit in accordance with GAAP. Research and resolve any discrepancies independently. Assist the Director of Finance with special projects as needed such as annual audit preparation work. Cash and Cash Equivalents and Investments Prepare all bank reconciliations, including resolving any issues with outstanding reconciling items. Reconcile investment accounts and prepare journal entries for Director of Finances review, including the investments of the AWAIC Foundation. Accounts Receivable, Donations - cash receipts Collaborate with the Development Department to prepare weekly deposits and reconcile donor receipts ensuring appropriate documentation is obtained for all. Collaborate with the Development Department in a reconciliation between the development and accounting software to ensure consistencies in reporting. Review account coding on all cash receipts for accuracy, consistency, and proper classification of revenues(support) in accordance with GAAP, specifically nonprofit accounting. Timely enter deposits into accounting software and create all deposit backup packets for record retention. Capital Assets Maintain capital asset and depreciation schedules, including annual capital asset inventory reconciliation Prepare all journal entries to reconcile capital asset schedule to accounting software. Payroll Timely review biweekly outputs from the 3rd party payroll processor, inputs are prepared by the Business Operations Assistant. Review changes to employee profiles to proper approved supporting documentation. Accounts payable - cash disbursements Rev ew all cash disbursements for accurate coding, allowability within budget, sufficient support and proper approval on weekly check runs. Review monthly credit card reconciliations, including reviewing against grant budgets and approve recognition in general ledger. Insurance and Employee Benefits Prepare documentation for submission for annual workers compensation audit. Gaming Permit Compliance Prepare all quarterly and annual State of Alaska Gaming reports for Director of Finances review. Business Operations Support Function as the main back up for all of the Business Operations Associates critical daily and weekly tasks for payroll and accounts payable. Supervisory Accountabilities: This position is not responsible for management or supervision of other positions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Nonprofit financial reporting Working knowledge and application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Knowledge of budgetary processes, resource allocation, and evaluation. Knowledge of nonprofit specific GAAP and financial reporting requirements. Knowledge of OMB compliance requirements. Knowledge of State of Alaska State Single Audit compliance requirements. Knowledge of IRS 990 tax form compliance and reporting requirements Knowledge of Department of Labor laws and regulations Skills Demonstrate excellent organization and filing skills. Sound and logical judgment, critical thinking, and reasoning. Effective financial problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently, juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and manage priorities. Knowledgeable and proficient in typical office software programs and applications. Knowledgeable in accounting and payroll software programs and applications. Interpersonal Demonstration of ethics, integrity, fairness, and trustworthiness.
