Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under departmental direction, the data collector performs activities to support the Crash Injury Research Engineering (CIREN) Study, sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The data collector assists an established research team by collecting data from hospital patients, EMS agencies, insurance companies, and law enforcement. They maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures to ensure compliance with study protocols and all appropriate regulations. They will visit hospital patients as needed to perform activities including, but not limited to:
  • Recruitment - screen, enroll, and consent
  • Data collection - administer questionnaires, take body measurements, photograph injuries, and answer patient questions about the research study
  • Data Processing - compile, enter, analyze, and submit study data
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree and experience in a public health or healthcare environment, or an equivalent combination of experience in a healthcare environment and education including training in research methodology, computerized data processing, and/or interviewing techniques

*This is NOT an engineering position*

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION after Hire
  • CITI certification for Human Subject Research
  • Encompass training for research coordinators
  • DOT Security Clearance and background check (need current license AND one of SSN card, birth certificate, or passport)
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Excellent reading comprehension
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Outgoing, professional, persistent, and willing to work daily in the hospital environment
  • Familiar with Encompass, Microsoft Office programs, and Adobe Reader
  • Background in a health-related field
  • Comfortable communicating with physicians, engineers, attorneys, and law enforcement
  • A person that practices with a critical thinking approach and is not afraid to point out to a superior (MD, PhD, etc) if something doesn't look right
  • Willing to perform data collection and entry tasks over long periods of time during an 8-hour workday
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Recruit Study Participants - review daily ER trauma list to screen for eligible subjects and then make in-person hospital visits to enroll them in the study
  2. Data Entry - input medical and crash data into a database
  3. Collect and Record Data - collect various forms of data from hospital record systems
  4. Determine and Code Injuries - use Encompass to review patients' charts and compile a list of crash-related injuries before coding them using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS)
  5. Imaging Analysis - access patients' radiology records via AHWFBMC software (AQNet, Intellispace, CIBpacs) in order to analyze for injury code determination. Team radiologists and MDs will assist with determining the correct codes for injuries.
  6. Data Analysis - conduct analyses of collected data and discuss interpretations and conclusions with research team
  7. Case Preparation - prepare powerpoint presentations that include medical details of the cases to be presented monthly. Each case must be prepared to answer specific injury and radiology questions.
  8. Sister Site Review - reviews case data of other CIREN network sites and provide feedback
  9. Collaboration - work in partnership with peers and physicians on research team
  10. Other - Perform other related duties as assigned or requested

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Office and hospital, depending on task at a given time
  • Non-remote position during training (first six months), limited hybrid (majority in-person) thereafter
