Plymouth, United States Zentis North America LLC Full time
Cost Engineering Technologist

Zentis is Europe's number one fruit processing company and one of the leading brand manufacturers of jams, sweets and custard-based dessert. The Company's North American operations are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Plymouth, Indiana, where we produce fruit and dairy preparations for a variety of customers including yogurt, ice cream and bakery manufacturers.

The Product Development Technologist responsible for Raw Materials manages, vets and coordinates cost and productivity projects across the Zentis U.S. businesses. This role is like the Product Development Technologist role in all aspects except majority of projects will be focused on improving reducing cost and/or improving efficiencies in the way we design our product recipes using ingredients that are cost effective and consistent across businesses.

This role works closely with other R&D colleagues and Procurement and Manufacturing groups to identify opportunities to reduce cost and retain or improve the quality of existing and future Zentis recipes while maintaining compliance with customer supplier management requirements.

The Technologist will apply their education and industry knowledge along with supplier technical resources to achieve project objectives. The focus of this position will be on the Zentis ingredient portfolio and by extension the processes used to specify, evaluate and process these ingredients in our recipes and operations.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Product Development Technologist focused on Raw Material Cost Engineering is responsible for conducting assessments, making recommendations, tracking and coordinating implementation of cost optimization and productivity projects. Examples of ingredient areas of focus include flavor matching, alternate supplier evaluations of fruit, stabilizers and colors.
    1. Evaluates current and alternative food ingredients, creates product recipes to evaluate changes and conducts informal sensory evaluation of products to ensure they meet customer needs and requirements.
    2. Plan and conduct plant trials of test formulas when needed.
    3. Work with other Product Development team members to coordinate implementation of changes into customer recipes.
    4. Recommend solutions to customer-driven cost savings programs based on knowledge of Zentis ingredients, their functionality and relative cost contribution.
    5. Transfer cost engineering desiccant into the Zentis US organization.
  • Coordinate work with Zentis U.S. Purchasing and Zentis Germany Cost Engineering group on strategic plans for future cost savings initiative. Estimate the feasibility of achieving results from an R&D and customer perspective. Collaborate with other technical functions, including U.S. Regulatory Affairs and Quality, to ensure all aspects of use are considered before committing R&D resources to implementation.
  • Maintain positive business relationships with current and potential suppliers in the areas we work to stay abreast of ingredient developments that could benefit Zentis. Share technical learning on ingredient categories with other R&D team members to elevate the teams’ understanding of the Zentis ingredient portfolio and how to maximize use of the existing ingredient portfolio.
  • Develop new and reformulated products based on customer briefs when needed to supplement the capacity of the overall team.
Formal Education Required:
  • Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Food Engineering.
Specific Experience and Key Knowledge Requirements:
  • Minimum experience required: 0 - 4 years product development, ingredient applications, quality or related food technical experience.
  • Ideal candidate or incumbent will also have knowledge or experience in one or more of the following food-related areas:
    1. formulation
    2. process scale-ups
    3. quality

  • Ability to analyze quantitative data using spreadsheet applications.
  • Strong familiarity with analytical testing methods and their application to food and food ingredients
