Job Description

Eligible candidates may qualify for up to a $30,000 hiring bonus.

Primary responsibility involves performance of specific tasks, as a scrub technologist and/or during surgical procedures to facilitate the efficient and safe progress of the surgical case. Assists with the maintenance of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. Maintains positive customer relations. Shall demonstrate competency and possess the technical skills appropriate for his/her assigned cases and utilizes that knowledge in assisting others. Performs various duties within his/her scope of responsibility and is accountable to the Clinical Manager.

The Cardiovascular Operating Room is a subset of our Main Operating Room, consisting of 3 open heart rooms, 1 cardiovascular/thoracic robot room and 1 hybrid room. It is a fast-paced, critical environment where our staff of Registered Nurses, Surgical Technologists, Surgical Assistants, and support staff work together to provide nationally recognized care. Our CVOR staff is highly proficient in complex and specialized cardiovascular surgical procedures including CABG, mitral/aortic valve repair/replacement, heart transplants, balloon pumps, Impella insertions, LVADs, RVADs, ECMO, ascending aortic aneurysms, minimally invasive procedures, and robotic heart/chest procedures. In the hybrid room, our CVOR staff assists with endovascular repairs of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms and acts as standby for procedures done by the Cath Lab and EP Lab. Our patients are high acuity and often have many co-morbidities. Good patient outcomes and patient safety is our number one priority and staff is highly supported by nursing leadership and medical leadership.

Responsibilities

Responsible for surgical preparation of surgical procedures.
  1. Checks daily assignment.
  2. Reviews surgical preference lists to clarify surgical routine and update preference lists as needed.
  3. Utilize resources to obtain needed supplies for the case.
  4. Checks table(s) for complete readiness for each procedure. Ensures all items needed for the case are present:
    • Obtains physician's special instruments and sutures prior to start of the case.
  5. Ensures communication made to surgeon prior to the start of the case if any supplies and/or equipment are unavailable.
Responsible for the set-up of sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment on assigned procedures.
  1. Demonstrates, maintains, identifies, and corrects any breaks in aseptic technique while setting up the case as well as during the surgical procedure.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge and dexterity in handling of special supplies and equipment and assures its proper functioning. Is knowledgeable of the specifics of the surgical procedure and able to perform these tasks in an organized and efficient manner.
  3. Effectively communicates pertinent information to relief personnel so as to provide safe continuity of care.
Promotes an environment of cooperation and teamwork.
  1. Attendance is prompt and regular.
  2. Effectively communicates with all health team members in a timely and courteous manner.
  3. Shares pertinent information with Charge Nurse.
  4. Willing to share knowledge with others.
  5. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to change.
  6. Takes only allotted time for breaks and lunch according to the policy.
  7. Returns borrowed equipment to proper room so that co-workers do not have to spend time locating it.
  8. Under the surgeon's supervision, assists with suctioning secretions, holding retractors, assisting with skin closure, cutting sutures and irrigating wounds.
  9. Circulates for operative procedures under supervision of R.N.
Assists with patient care at the end of the surgical procedure.
  1. Operative site is prepared.
    • Cleanses operative site.
    • Connects drainage tubes to appropriate devices.
    • Assists and/or applied sterile dressing.
  2. Assists with patient transfer to bed/stretcher.
  3. Covers soiled gloves with clean exam gloves.
  4. Assists with transfer with adequate number of assistants present.
  5. Responsible for knowing and using good body mechanics.
  6. Processes case cart.
  7. Disassembles table(s) contents and instruments, and places in proper receptacles for cleaning.
  8. Sends (appropriate) instruments to CSR and/or clean up room for terminal cleaning.
  9. Disposes of trash and linen appropriately.
  10. Assists in expediting case turnaround time.
  11. Assists with cleaning of tables, floors, etc
Promotes safe environment for patient and all health care members.
  1. Instruments, sharps, and sponges are counted according to policy.
  2. Identifies and transfers surgical specimens according to O.R. policy.
  3. Performs safety check on all equipment (power instruments, etc.) for proper assembly, completeness and operation before it is used.
  4. Correctly prepares and labels medications including dosages and percentages to be used during the case according to type of procedure to be done and/or doctor's preference card.
  5. Keeps operative field free of unused instruments, equipment, and sharps.
    • Receives instruments from surgeon.
    • Keeps instruments clean by wiping blood and tissue from instruments.
    • Removes unnecessary articles from the operative field.
  6. Follows universal precautions according to hospital policy
Professional Development - Assumes responsibility and accountability for professional growth and development. Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others.
  1. Participates in 75% of staff meetings and 75% of council meetings as appropriate. Participates in council activities and task forces to improve competencies of self, co-workers, and staff members related to patient care.
  2. Supports self and peers in professional growth and development utilizing resources and opportunities within and outside of The Christ Hospital. Acts as a resource, educator and preceptor for staff and nursing students.
  3. Dress code of the Operating Room is followed.
  4. Volunteer's assistance as a resource and/or preceptor in assigned areas.
  5. Assists in the orientation of new personnel.
  6. Maintains competency in POC (point of care) testing for unit specific nursing practice.
  7. Completes all educational requirements to maintain competency related to specific population of patient and/or regulatory agencies (Healthstream education 100% on-time completion and attendance for annual education day). Submits required tests and paperwork in a timely manner without management interventions.
  8. Participates in self and peer review activities to include the positive recognition of peers and staff on a regular basis.
  9. Participation in professional advancement program is encouraged.
  10. Prepares for certification specific to work area of professional practice when eligible.
  11. Participation in chosen professional organizations, conferences and research is encouraged.
  12. Evaluates nurse-sensitive outcomes and participates in performance improvement initiatives.

  17. Protects patient's privacy by insuring confidentiality of chart and history.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:
  • The surgical technologist is a graduate of an approved school of surgical technology.
  • The surgical technologist functions during operative procedures as the sterile member of the team to hand instruments, sutures, and supplies.
  • The approved surgical technologist programs are a two year program of education and on the job practice which allows the technologist to graduate at the end of the course, and work in a hospital O.R.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
  • 1 year of CVOR experience preferred
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Has contact with physicians, families, and other hospital personnel related to care of assigned patients.
  • Sound judgment and knowledge of scientific principles must be used.
  • Competency in selected skills is required through hospital provided instruction.
  • Frequent exposure to stressful patient situations requires the ability to maintain composure in order to respond swiftly and effectively to patient needs.
  • The Surgical Technologists demonstrates the knowledge, abilities, and skills to provide age and culturally specific patient care and education.
  • The ST effectively communicates with peers, utilizes appropriate channels of communication and maintains absolute confidentiality.
  • The ST maintains competence and demonstrates evidence of continuing professional growth.
  • The ST demonstrates the ability to accept and implement change and the ability to work in a culturally diverse setting.
  • The ST is responsible for knowledge, use, care, and handling of surgical instruments.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
  • The Surgical Technologist is a graduate of an approved school of Surgical Technology.
  • Membership in professional organizations is desirable.
  • BLS certification is required prior to patient contact.
  • Certification in area of clinical specialty (CST) is expected and must be maintained by 12/31/2018 for current employees.
  • New employees must be eligible to be certified and certification must be attained within six months of hire.
