Job Title: Staff Paralegal
Department: Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC)
Reports To: Supervising Paralegal

Pay Grade: N7
Job Type: Regular, Full-Time
AKBCU: No ICPA: No
General Functions: The Paralegal is responsible for assisting in providing comprehensive, high quality legal services to Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC) participants and clients. This position works closely with ANJC Staff Attorneys, Tribal Court Facilitators, Paralegals, and Advocate Case Managers. Our team: 1) represents Alaska Tribes in child welfare matters that implicate the Indian Child Welfare Act; 2) provides technical assistance and training to tribal justice systems; 3) provides civil legal services to primarily Alaska Native/American Indian victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, dating violence and stalking; 4) provides services to Elders; and 5) assists Alaska Native/American Indian people seeking certain employment based variances.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interview and screen prospective clients.
- Prepare legal documents and correspondence.
- Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, courts, and community partners.
- Perform legal and factual research.
- Provide litigation support.
- Attend case meetings as directed.
- Provide community education, independent presentations, assistance with legal clinics, and development of educational materials.
- Provide information as requested for grant and funder reporting.
- Actively participate in ANJC and CITC privacy trainings and protect the privacy of participant information in accordance with applicable privacy policies, procedures and practices, as required by federal and state law. Failure to comply with the policies and procedures on participant privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Alaska Native and American Indian culture, governance, or community resources.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years of experience as a paralegal or legal advocate.
- Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.
- Continued employment is contingent upon a receipt of a satisfactory state and federal background check.
- May be required to travel to urban and rural areas within Alaska, and occasionally out of state.
- Associates Degree, preferably in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, or equivalent.
- Experience providing services to elders.
- Experience with the Alaska Background Check program's variance request process.
- Familiarity with the Indian Child Welfare Act.
- Familiarity with the challenges addressing sexual assault and domestic violence-related issues.
- Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
