Summary This position is located at Mechanical Unit at the Captain James A. Lovel Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois, The Industrial Equipment Mechanic performs various installing, repairing, overhauling, aligning, modifying, relocating, and maintaining of various types of automated equipment, and systems that have complex interrelationships among components. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to: Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, installs, relocates, tests, overhauls, modifies, troubleshoots to determine extent of repairs required and materials needed, and adjusts various types of industrial, medical, engineering and building service equipment; Diagnoses and repairs machinery having interrelated components of electric, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic operation, including automated conveyor systems, electronic and pneumatic actuators, divert systems, small elevator assemblies, automated tablet and capsule dispensers, automated tablet/capsule counters, automated unit-of-use equipment, bottle sorters, bottle capping system and assorted label printers; Performs preventative maintenance to industrial compressed air equipment and various hydraulic equipment; Utilizes amp meters, volt/ ohm meters to troubleshoot electrical problems in a wide array of industrial and facility systems such as batteries, motor controls, refrigerator/freezers, power supplies, powered logic controllers and wiring systems; Utilizes arc welders, torches, machine tools, micrometers, power drills, saws and grinders to accurately measure and fabricate braces, supports or adjustable workstations, repair machinery, etc.; Lays out, disassembles, installs, aligns, repairs, overhauls, and maintains various types of electronic and pneumatic actuators, divert systems, conveyor systems and elevator/lift assemblies that have complex interrelationships among components; Repairs and maintains mechanical and electronic components of systems that require a broad range of troubleshooting skills to diagnose, maintain, and calibrate/repair; Lays out, disassembles, installs, aligns, repairs, overhauls, and maintains various types of conveyors, mover motors, drive belts, picker assemblies supporting multiple, automated unit-of-use dispensing equipment; Disassembles and repairs general industrial plant machinery, equipment, and systems such as conveyor systems, bridge cranes, air compressors, and dynamometers; Dismantles, moves, and relocates various types of industrial plant machinery and equipment or installs new machinery and equipment; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Handles objects weighing 45 pounds and occasionally carries objects weighing 45 pounds and over for considerable distances. Pushes, pulls, reaches, walks, stands, cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time. Work is performed in an industrial warehouse setting. Requires wearing protective clothing such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and glasses as necessary. May be exposed to equipment that operates on 480 volt and therefore required to wear protective and Arc Flash clothing. Usually performs work inside areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises. Frequently exposed to noise and vibration from machines. Works with electric and manual tools that are dangerous and could cause cuts and bruises. Occasionally required to climb and work from ladders exposing the incumbent to possibility of injury from slipping and falling. Frequently encounters dirt and grease.
