I. GENERAL SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Outpatient Pharmacy Manager, the Outpatient Staff Pharmacist is responsible for participating in and supervising the safe and effective procurement, storage, preparation and dispensing of drugs in compliance with established standards..

II. REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for procurement, preparation and dispensing of medications; verifies medications are dispensed in accordance with accepted professional standards, facility procedures, as well as state and federal legal requirements

Consults with patients regarding individual medications or supplies prescribed, including dosage, frequency, specialized requirements and possible drug interactions.

Serves as liaison for customer service difficulties; intercedes in patient issues that are beyond the limits of the pharmacy staff. Directs staff in activities to resolve customer problems and recover the customer's good will.

Assists in the oversight of clinical activities of the pharmacy technicians in the absence of the outpatient pharmacy manager.

Participates in achieving business goals and metrics for the outpatient pharmacy.

Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and keeps abreast of developments in the pharmaceutical field. Provides documentation in writing to support the fulfillment of continuing education requirements for re-licensure yearly at evaluation time.

Adheres to the hospital's guest relations policy. Interacts positively with others and works cooperatively with both pharmacy and hospital staff. Answers the telephone in a friendly, courteous manner.

Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

III. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The analytical skills required to interpret physicians' orders and to review patient's profile to avoid over-dosage or toxicity.

The communication skills necessary to deliver and obtain information in a clear, concise manner.

The interpersonal skills necessary to interface with physicians, nurses, and other customers in meeting patients' pharmaceutical needs, and to direct the activities of pharmacy technicians.

The organizational skills necessary for day-to-day coordination of the pharmacy service.

IV. KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE/REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

B.S. in Pharmacy or Pharm D degree.

Current license to practice pharmacy in the State of Illinois.

One or more years of experience in an applicable pharmacy practice site preferred

V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May require light physical effort.

May require frequent periods of standing or walking.

May require frequent lifting or moving of lightweight materials, occasional moving or lifting of average weight material, or rarely lifting or moving heavy weight material.

Flow of work and character of duties involves part normal and part concentrated attention along with manual coordination. 75% or more time spent looking at computer screen
