POSITION SUMMARY: Provide radiation therapy services by contributing as an essential member of the radiation oncology treatment team through provision of total quality care of each patient undergoing a prescribed course of treatment. Demonstrates a level of mastery and expertise in the delivery of a wide variety of radiation treatment techniques and procedures and assumes increased responsibility for efficient patient flow and accurate execution of treatment plans. SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED: Performs duties under supervision of the Technical Director and Lead Therapists regarding patient treatments, set-up techniques and scheduling. SIGNIFICANT DUTIES: Clinical & Patient Treatments – 90% Evaluate and assess treatment delivery components. Provide radiation therapy treatment delivery services to cure or improve the quality of life of patients by accurately delivering a prescribed course of treatment. Evaluate and assess daily the physiologic and psychological responsiveness of each patient to treatment deliver & refer patient for appropriate management when indicated. Coordinate and meet multiple patient needs and requests and set priorities following DRO guidelines for appropriate patient care. Participate effectively in a therapeutic team approach to provide optimum radiation therapy treatments. Adapt to contingency planning in response to variables which influence work load and/or schedule. Maintain a flexible stance toward patients, visitors and staff, as well s technology and bureaucracy. Implement and deliver a planned course of external beam, STRS, STRT, TBI, or IMRT treatment. Administer treatment accurately and safely; monitor and report untoward effects, reactions, therapeutic responses and incompatibilities. Withhold treatment when conditions warrant and consult with a radiation oncologist before proceeding. Accurately document details of treatment procedures, billing codes and maintain daily treatment records updating as often s required. Apply principles of radiation protection at all times. Take appropriate action with regard to real or potential radiation hazards. Understand the function of equipment, accessories, treatment methods and protocols, and apply such knowledge appropriately. Construct and/or prepare and utilize immobilization devices, beam directional devices and the like which facilitate treatment deliver. Perform dosimetric calculations as requested and for emergency/on-call situations. Monitor dose to normal tissues within the irradiated volume to assure that tolerance levels are not exceeded. Create a climate for and establish a commitment to healing and/or improving quality of life. Provide comfort measures and facilitate the preservation of patient self-image and dignity. Serve as a source of support and encouragement for each individual patient and their families. Monitor and interpret patient side effects and/or complications in order to create a management strategy that fosters prevention, healing and comfort. Practice techniques which prevent the spread of disease to provide a safe environment for patients, staff and self. Educate and prepare patients for procedures to gain desired result and minimize anxiety. Identify and manage a patient crisis until physician assistance is available. Take appropriate action in case of fire or other emergency situations to provide a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Demonstrate respect for confidentiality of medical records and privileged knowledge. Demonstrate respect for the “Patient’s Bill of Rights”. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and efficiently perform a consistently high quality of work. Demonstrate good time management skills and assume appropriate division of duties when working with a team of therapists. Adhere to all University standards, policies and procedures. Demonstrate level of expertise in the safe operation of all equipment specific to job requirements. Maintain adequate supplies and linens in treatment rooms and patient changing rooms at all times. Take initiative to assume additional responsibilities and lend support to coworkers. Maintain general cleanliness and organization of treatment rooms and control area at all times. Available for weekend and holiday duty on a rotational basis or as requested. Input and check data in the ARIA system. Input data and utilize Electronic Portal Imager/On Board Imaging/CT Imaging Perform basic simulations as required for emergency/on-call situations. General QI/PI/CE activities 5% Attend service team meetings as appropriate Attend Chart rounds on a rotational basis. Attend DRO, continuing education and other meetings as requested by supervisors. Quality Assurance 5% Perform chart check prior to treating patient and on a routine basis. Participate in QA/QI to ensure safe and accurate patient care. Detect equipment malfunctions, take appropriate action and report to appropriate personnel. Perform daily, weekly and monthly QA checks and related tasks as appropriate. REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory completion of formal radiation therapy technology education from an accredited program. New York State licensure by the New York Department of Health, as per Article 35 of the Public Health Law. Registered in radiation therapy technology by the ARRT and maintains certification by participation in mandatory continuing education programs.
