The Director of Assessment and Referral directs, implements, and coordinates the referral and admissions process, assuring smooth and orderly admissions into the hospital. Receives incoming inquiry calls, assesses patients for admission, and makes appropriate referrals. Supervises and provides direction to the Assessment and Referral department while working with other members of the leadership team to ensure outstanding customer service and quality care. The Director ensures compliance for quality patient care and compliance with Joint Commission standards, CMS, state health department and all other regulatory standards. The director also participates in business development activities as needed.

Qualifications

Licenses or Certifications:

  • License counselor, therapist or registered nurse preferred.
  • Current CPR and Handle with Care (HWC) certifications, or must obtain within three (3) weeks of date of hire.

Total education, vocational training and experience:

  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Sociology, or a related field required.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to assess the physical, emotion, and psychological needs of patients.
  2. Ability to determine suitability of admission to the hospital based on clinical and financial criteria.
  3. Ability to prioritize and assign tasks and hold staff responsible for their completion.
  4. Ability to utilize computer generated reports to analyze data and make decisions.
  5. Ability to make independent and responsible decisions.
  6. Good knowledge of admitting and insurance verification.
  7. Must have ability to work in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  8. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required to communicate with patients, families, referral sources, community agencies, and staff.
  9. Knowledge of telephone etiquette is required.
  10. Must be able to interact with patients, physicians, families and hospital personnel in a professional and courteous manner.
  11. Work is of medium demand, requiring heavy telephone and personal contact with patients, employees, referral sources, community agencies, and insurance companies.
