REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center supports a shared leadership philosophy and encourages staff to demonstrate accountability for their own practice. Therefore, the nursing organization reflects a flat structure. The counselor reports to a supervisor or clinical director, who in turn reports to the Vice President of Patient Care Services. No subordinates formally report to this position, but the incumbent may serve as a mentor to other staff and may delegate activities to unlicensed assistive personnel as outlined in the MercyOne Delegation Policy. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The professional counselor will adhere to the IBC content. IC&RC Alcohol & Drug Counselor Job Analysis identified four performance domains: Screening, Assessment, and Engagement Treatment Planning, Collaboration, and Referral Counseling Professional and Ethical Responsibilities WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: In an 8-hour day, the employee must be able to sit for 6 hours and stand/walk for 2 hours. Occasionally (6-10% of work time) required to bend/stoop, reach above shoulder level, kneel, and push/pull. Position required occasional (6-10% of work time) lifting and/or carrying up to 10 lbs. Requires ability to respond to unpredictable situations frequently. Requires the ability to record activities independently or with a device assistant. Job requires high level of mental concentration to attain established deadlines. Working environment includes frequent interruptions. May be exposed to marked changes in temperature and humidity, infectious diseases, hazardous waste, and chemicals. Must be able to see at near visual acuity level. Must be able to speak. Must be able to hear speech. Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Master’s degree in addiction studies or related field or working on completion of degree. Licensure as a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) preferred. State certification as a substance abuse counselor or eligibility with completion of certification within one year following date of hire (tCADC, CADC, IADC, IAADC). Not required if licensed as a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Minimum of two years of clinical counseling experience in a mental health or substance use disorder setting is preferred. The counselor, if a recovering person, must have a minimum of three years continuous sobriety or freedom from mood altering chemicals. Maintain continuing education units per the state certification requirements and continuously seek opportunities to enhance their own professional nursing practice. Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter.
