Summary of Description:

The Coating Inspector shall possess knowledge and skills relating to the application of protective coatings to pipelines fabricated piping and storage tanks. The inspector should be familiar with and have experience in applying protective coatings, operating test equipment, monitoring the application of the coatings and enforcing Company, industry and manufacturers specifications. The inspector must be familiar with safety standards applicable to coating applications as set forth in OSHA Construction Industry standards. This position will inspect daily surface preparation activities, painting and coating operations for clients across various industries.

Duties:
  • The Coating Inspector shall possess knowledge and skills relating to the application of protective coatings to pipelines, fabricated piping and storage tanks.
  • Performs visual and non-destructive examination on stationary equipment in accordance with the API and ASME standards, provides client with technical recommendations for the repair, re-rate, replacement and/or alteration of plant equipment.
  • Performs assigned routine test on materials, services in process or finished projects where results are compared with Company quality standards.
  • Report results to Supervisor who will make an analysis and take necessary action.
  • Inspects visually for obvious defects.
  • Performs detailed visual inspection, when necessary to determine quality of product/services where limits are not clearly defined.
  • Identifies defective work and helps put corrective actions in place.
  • Records results on inspection forms or charts and reports number of defects found.
  • Post and maintain forms and charts of inspection data, quality levels of special quality studies.
  • May act as quality control department clerk, maintaining all quality records for facility.
  • Verify that all materials used in the performance of the job assignment are in compliance with client company requirements.
  • Cooperates and works closely with the Repair/Cut-Out Welding Inspector, NDT and Contractor's Representative to assure that no repairs or cutouts are coated and layered in.
  • Assures that all specifications and safety standards are adhered to.
  • Records and reports material usage and waste.
  • Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED), and at least five (5) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Specific Skills:
  • Must be familiar with safety standards applicable to coating applications as set forth in OSHA Construction Industry Standards.
  • In depth working knowledge of API 510/570 (certification, a plus) and ASME standards.
  • Experience with non-destructive testing is a benefit, but not required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the application or inspection of coating in the petroleum or chemical industries, or
  • One year experience in the application or inspection of coating and either NACE CIP Level III certification or SSPC PCI Level III certification.
  • API 1169 Certification is required by inspectors (after January 1, 2019).
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Ability to walk on even and uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to wear PPE including fire retardant clothing, hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, respirator.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to walk up to one mile on industrial plant and construction sites outdoors at any time of the year.
  • Ability to work in protective clothing which may elevate body temperatures by several degrees Fahrenheit for periods of up to 15 minutes without a break.
  • Ability to use multi-level stair towers and rung ladders unassisted.
  • Ability to hear safety alarms and signals while wearing hearing protection.
  • Ability to sit at desk and operate computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand, use hands and fingers, grip, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk and hear.
  • Ability to see with visual acuity and distinguish between colors.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift and carry 15 lbs. on a regular basis is required and at times lifting up to 25 lbs. may be required.


Requirements

*Due to in plant position the below referenced Job Duties have been provided by the client.

Coating Inspector:
- Review and approve coating execution plans
- Review and approve daily inspection reports
- Witness hold points on all major coating jobs
- Witness QC tests being performed (holiday test, CSN test, Profile test, etc.)
- Coordinate with Contract QC on work process (percentage complete, sq ft blasted, gallons used, etc.)
- Recommend coating systems utilized in the R-specs
- Assess existing coating condition of upcoming jobs and recommend a repair procedure
- Take pictures to document each hold point in the job process

Miscellaneous duties:
- Fill out Haz Reviews for approval by I&H department
- Sign permit as sponsor for inspection companies performing work (drone, MFE, X-Ray, etc.)
- Oversee and coordinate with external shell scan crews
- Mark up weld repairs per API 653 on new weld jobs
- Witness QC tests performed (PT, MT, Vacuum Test, etc.)
- Perform API 653 external inspections including:
- Report on tank conditions
- UT all nozzles attached to tank
- UT chime, shell and roof
- Assess coating condition
- Perform CP test
- Inspect hydro on tanks using blacklight and sign off
- Sign off final closure for tanks to be put back in service
- Locate and assess PSV's using OSI and P&ID
- Enter UT reading in PCMS on existing circuits as well as creating new circuits
- Enter external API tank reports into PSMS
- Add recommendation to SAP
