Overview

We are looking for an entry- or mid-level engineer excited to help secure safe drinking water to our most vulnerable population. The work is conducted as part of the Healthy Homes: Manufactured Housing Community effort and entails direct work with consultants and public drinking water systems. You will be part of the Agency of Natural Resources, Public Drinking Water Program, and will be working closely with a team of engineers and scientists to review and optimize drinking water design plans through research, analysis, and site visits.

  • You like helping others. You are patient and level-headed when providing technical and regulatory assistance to Vermont's public drinking water systems and their consultants.

The engineering team has two licensed engineers, and we will actively support you in your pursuit of a professional engineering license through collaboration, training and mentorship.

The Agency of Natural Resources and Drinking Water Program has an employee-friendly telework policy, requiring staff (once trained) to work from the office as little as a few days a month. The rest of the days, staff are welcome to work in the office as they wish or work from their productive home offices. Frequent site visits will be expected as part of your training.

The position is limited service for 2 years, with the potential to become long-term, and when considering salary, remember that benefits is worth ~30% of your total compensation.

As of July 14, 2024 the step 1 rate for pay grade 22 will be $25.10 per hour. Starting pay is negotiable based on experience.

Who May Apply

This position, Environmental Engineer III - Public Drinking Water Program - Limited Service (Job Requisition #50439), is open to all State employees and external applicants. It is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period of time. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in environmental, sanitary, water resources, chemical, civil or air pollution engineering AND one (1) year or more of professional experience in environmental, sanitary, water resources, chemical, civil or air pollution engineering.

OR

Bachelor's degree in environmental, sanitary, chemical, water resources, civil or mechanical engineering AND three (3) years or more of professional experience in environmental, sanitary, water resources, chemical, civil or air pollution engineering.

OR

Bachelor's degree in any field of engineering AND four (4) years or more of professional experience in environmental, sanitary, chemical, water resources, civil or air pollution engineering.

OR

Two (2) years or more of experience as an Environmental Engineer II.
