Job Description

Purpose

Job Summary

The Victim Services Case Manager will assess and evaluate victims of crime for services. Will provide crisis intervention, stabilization and referrals within KIC and the community to deliver wrap around services to victims.

Services provided may include crisis intervention, court based advocacy, culturally based healing practice, victim advocacy, and transportation. Collaborate with staff, supervisor, and community liaisons to ensure that safety plans are holistic and culturally responsive.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide crisis intervention, stabilization and referrals within KIC and the community to deliver wrap around services for victims of crime.

  • Address immediate and on-going needs of victims using a victim centered response and develop individualized case plans.Support victims by providing financial aid including funds for emergency food/snacks, clothing, and personal hygiene products, etc.

  • Provide information on victims’ rights and transportation as necessary.

  • Maintain victim information confidential.

  • Advocate, accompany and/or negotiate on the behalf of victims in a variety of civil and criminal systems.

  • Assist victims with Crime Victim Compensation claims filing process and follow-up.

  • Serve as a liaison with the Office of Victim Services Vocational Rehabilitation Unit as well as the point of contact for Alaska Legal Services.

  • Collaborate with DV Taskforce, SART, and DART to identify topics, venues, and concerns reflecting new scope of expansion for the domestic violence program.

  • Prepare and maintain required documentation in a timely and thorough manner in compliance with department, state and federal policy and regulations.

  • Assist in the development and evaluation of policies, procedures and trauma-informed protocols. Complete and attend additional training events identified by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Possess current valid State of Alaska driver's license with a record acceptable to KIC’s Insurance carrier.

  • Must pass child protective services and criminal history and background check.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Family/Consumer Sciences, Child Development, Substance Abuse, Mental Health, Human Services, Education, Criminology, or counseling, and therapy fields required.

  • Progressive, responsible social work, human services, clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform duties in this position.

A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of state and federal “best practice” guidelines for Social Services Programs

  • Knowledge and experience with victims of violent crime;

  • Knowledge of social work and case management services in a clinical and community based setting;

  • Knowledge of Violent Crime Compensation funding;

  • Knowledge of the tribal culture and appropriately displays behaviors and understanding that reflect cultural values;

  • Knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA);

  • Skill to operate software programs;

  • Ability to maintain favorable public relations to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to evaluate specific situations and recommend solutions;

  • Ability to communicate with victims in a way that validates the individuality, experience, decisions, and strengths of person who have been victimized in a respectful and skilled manner;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with Tribal members, peers, public and private agencies;

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, including telephone, computer operations and in-person visits simultaneously;

  • Ability to take verbal instruction and complete assigned project by established deadline;

  • Ability to be flexible in order to perform at the highest level as a team player;

  • Ability to utilize maximum degree of professionalism and diplomacy with those who may be experiencing a high degree of stress both mentally and/or physically (both clients and co-workers);

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and able to prioritize assignments;

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all KIC operations and staff.

The work is mostly sedentary with some walking, climbing of stairs, carrying of files, or other documents and light supplies, bending and stooping to perform filing

Work is performed in a small office with limited storage, filing and workspace. People asking questions/directions frequently interrupt incumbent. Some work is performed in conference rooms and at photocopy/fax machine. Writing by hand and using a personal computer. Long hours in front of computer screen. Traveling occasionally, to out-of-town meetings and functions.

The environment involves the usual risks and stress of an office environment within a public service facility. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions for employees such as blood drawing for screening of various diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc. are necessary. The employee is occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled client and/or family members.

  • May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.
