Summary

Director: plans and supervises all aspects of the Dental Assisting program including all courses taught in the dental assisting program. These activities include but are not limited to developing, implementation and evaluation of curriculum, personnel and procedures. The Director will be responsible for State Board reporting and ensuring program meets State Board requirements. The Director Position will also include teaching dental assisting courses including clinical instruction.

Instructor: Under the direction of the Dean of Instructional Services, provide instruction in the program. The assignments for this position may include collegiate transfer and pre-collegiate basic skills courses. This position may also include a combination of day, evening, online and/or hybrid teaching assignments.

Education and Experience

Dental Assisting Director:

See "standard minimum qualifications" detailed at the beginning of this list, in addition to which applicant must provide the following;

1. Hold a valid special permit or valid license as a dentist, registered dental hygienist, registered dental assistant, registered dental assistant in extended functions, registered dental hygienist in extended functions, or registered dental hygienists in alternative practice issued by the Dental Board of California or Dental Hygiene Committee of California;

AND

2. All faculty shall have been licensed for a minimum of two years. All faculty shall have the education, background, and occupational experience and/or teaching expertise necessary to perform, teach, and evaluate dental radiographs.

AND

3. Shall have either passed the radiation safety examination administered by the board or equivalent licensing examination as a dentist, registered dental hygienist, registered dental assistant, registered dental assistant in extended functions, registered dental hygienist in extended functions, or registered dental hygienists in alternative practice or, on or after January 1, 1985, shall have successfully completed a board approved radiation safety course.

AND

4. For Coronal polishing and Pit and Fissure sealants: faculty member shall possess a valid, active, and current RDAEF, RDH, RDHEF, RDHAP, or dentist license issued by the Board, or an RDA license issued by the Board if the person has completed a Board-approved course in the above topics.

Licenses and Certificates

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Director Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Maintain familiarity and adherence with the Dental Board of California rules and regulations.
  • Participate in recruiting, hiring, orienting, and evaluating faculty/staff.
  • Conduct on-going program review.
  • Provide staff development for Dental faculty.
  • Develop agendas, conduct staff meetings, and keep minutes.
  • Schedule staff and facilities for clinical rotations
  • Provide detailed interim reports including statistics for state program.
  • Provide travel arrangements for students and staff clinical rotations.
  • Direct the selection, counseling, evaluation, and dismissal of students from the program.
  • Attend regularly scheduled director meetings.
  • Update curriculum, instructional plans, and lesson plans to meet state regulations.
  • Update applications for the Dental programs.
  • Conduct annual advisory board meetings.
  • Complete and submit all required reports to Dental Board of California. Maintain all State Dental Board required documents and records and communicate with Board as appropriate.
  • Schedule for clinical facility rotations.
  • Responsible for general oversight of the campus dental learning clinic.
  • Maintain program policies and procedures.
Instructor Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Instruct assigned classes in accordance with the course outline of record
  • Provide dynamic instruction with the ability to engage student interest by using current and effective andragogy
  • Meet faculty responsibilities as outlined in the faculty contract:
  • Meeting with classes as scheduled by the appropriate Educational Administrator
  • Writing and updating course outlines of record. This should be done in cooperation with other unit members who teach in the same subject area
  • Teaching classes in accordance with the intent of the college catalog and with the objectives and content of the course outline of record
  • Providing a current syllabus which is consistent with the course outline of record to all students for each class. A course syllabus for each course taught shall be filed by the unit member with the appropriate Educational Administrator within one week of the first meeting of the class
  • Reviewing, in cooperation with other faculty in the same subject area, textbooks, required reading, workbooks, and other materials
  • Maintaining accurate and current records of student attendance and student achievement in accordance with District procedures
  • Demonstrating continuing education toward maintaining currency with developments and changes in subject-matter field through coursework, conferences, workshops, seminars, professional training, and professional reading; or informal learning experiences as they pertain to the unit member's subject area
  • Serving on standing and ad hoc committees, as assigned by the Academic SenateSupervising the care and maintenance of equipment provided for student use in classes
  • Attending graduation ceremonies
  • Fulfilling flex obligation
  • Participating in and completing Instructional Program Review
  • Reporting absences to the appropriate Educational Administrator
  • Directing the work of classified staff as appropriate to the assignment
  • Directing the work of Student workers as appropriate to the assignment and as agreed to in the request made by the faculty member for a student worker and subsequent approval of that request
  • Submitting grade rosters to the Registrar's office within five (5) District business days after the last day of finals and completing all attendance rosters and other administrative forms as scheduled
  • Participating in Student Learning Outcome (SLO) Assessment
  • Participating in the use of the Electronic Early Alert System as appropriate
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
