Chicago, United States Trinity United Church of Christ Full time

The Endeleo Institute

Job Description

Position: Executive Director

Reports to: Chair, Endeleo Board of Directors and its Board

The Endeleo Institute:

Named after the Swahili word for growth, progress, and development, The Endeleo Institute is a non-profit organization which fully integrates three existing community service corporations, all founded by the Trinity United Church of Christ ("Trinity") more than a decade ago, into one thriving, sustainable, and effective organization. Trinity is one of the largest and most progressive churches in the nation with a congregation of more than 8,000. It has been a leader through its affiliate organizations in improving education, health, and social service outcomes for under-served residents across Chicago and its suburbs.

The Endeleo Institute is the organizational framework to fully integrate existing programs and create a new comprehensive model of community development focused on the 95th Street Corridor and specific neighborhoods surrounding the church. Building on the solid reputation and programmatic success of the three former non-profit organizations, the Reverend Dr. Otis Moss III spearheaded the creation of the Endeleo Institute. The Endeleo board consists of civic, business, non-profit, and social service leaders in Chicago, many of which are members of Trinity United Church of Christ.

With a primary geographic center on the 95th Street Corridor, and the greater Southside as its secondary area, the Endeleo Institute's main focus is on issues of education, healthcare awareness, and both community and economic development.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director of the Endeleo Institute will be a leader and strategic thinker in designing new, and sustaining existing, programs in three areas: education, health, and community development. Another essential responsibility involves the creation of partnerships with faith-based, community, and civic institutions as well as other key stakeholders to improve the quality of life of underserved residents on the South Side of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Furthermore, the Executive Director will also work closely with foundations and other philanthropic partners to collaborate on projects and garner additional resources to sustain health, progress education, and physically improve the local Chicago community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities for Year 1:
•Continue to strengthen the comprehensive and cohesive faith-based model of community development, in consultation with the Board of Directors, with a focus on the three major Endeleo components: Education, Health, and Community Development.
•Guide the creation of Endeleo's strategic planning. This includes priority setting, engaging potential community-based and civic partners, identifying funding opportunities, and building the Endeleo brand.
•Develop and strengthen ongoing partnerships with community and civic organizations across the City of Chicago and suburbs.
•Seek funding to support Endeleo's mission from public, private, and corporate sources/partners.
•Manage a core team and develop strategies to organize the community.
•Explore possible partnerships with civic and community-based organizations that may be able to assist Endeleo in fulfilling its mission.
•Develop metrics and evaluation criteria to measure the effectiveness and quality of existing programs and initiatives.
•Become a spokesperson for Endeleo across the city and region, representing our mission, vision, strategic direction, and program success. [Is this redundant?]
•Identify and coordinate strategic development opportunities in collaboration with the Board of Managers of the Trinity Imani Village Development Initiative, a social enterprise with the goal to transform more than 23 acres along the 95 Street Corridor into a sustainable green urban community on Chicago's South side.

Qualifications:

The Executive Director should be capable in both internal and external roles. Internally, the Director will partake in supervising, leading and inspiring staff while also productively collaborating with the Board. Externally, the Executive Director will maintain an active role as the public face of the organization with strong communications skills to convey a passion for the mission and priorities of The Endeleo Institute. Other qualifications and skills required:
•Interpersonal, organizational, leadership, presentation, time management, problem-solving, and oral/written communication skills.
•The demonstrated ability to work successfully under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
•Ability to extend the workday hours with flexibility as individual situations require; this also entails working evenings and weekends as required.
•Ability to work effectively with volunteers and faith-based leaders in order to build and ultimately foster strong relationships with community, civic, corporate, and non-profit leaders across the City of Chicago.
•Ability to lead a collaborative/team-oriented effort.
•Proficient in appropriate and innovative technology, including social media platforms as needed to accomplish tasks
•Establish and coordinate communications/public relations protocols
•Proficient knowledge of the most effective faith-based community development programs and partnerships in the country.
•Ability to create a strategic plan to help the organization achieve its mission.
•Demonstrated ability to generate new funding sources and improve financial results.

Education/Experience Requirements:
•The candidate must at a minimum have a Bachelor's Degree in urban policy and planning, community development and non-profit administration, or other related disciplines (though a Master's Degree is strongly preferred).
•Minimum of five years' work experience in creating, implementing, and fundraising collaborative initiatives focused on urban, underserved community areas.
•Demonstrated experience in working with nonprofit boards of directors.
•Demonstrated experience in developing and coordinating staff and advisors of a nonprofit organization.
