Education Week, the nonprofit media organization that provides trusted news, information, and resources on K-12 American education, is seeking a fundraising specialist to join our Development Department.

Job Summary

As a member of the organization's development team, this position will advance Education Week's mission by helping to secure grant funding that supports the news, research, video/multimedia, publishing, and digital communication activities that have served the K-12 education field for decades. The Development Associate will report to Education Week’s Director of Development and engage in a full range of crucial fundraising and grant-management activities, initiatives, and critical related operational efforts.

Those who excel in this position will have a passion for education and deep commitment to expanding their knowledge and skill sets relating to fundraising, communications/marketing, and nonprofit management. This hybrid position is based in Education Week's Bethesda, MD, office in the Washington DC metro area.

Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in researching foundations and other prospective funders to diversify Education Week's grant revenue
  • Work to build, maintain, and analyze our database of prospective funders
  • Help to develop and deploy outreach messaging, emails, and other fundraising communications collateral
  • Assist with the execution, and monitoring of funder engagement plans
  • Support Development Director and Vice President in creating fundraising materials (e.g., pitches, presentations, proposals) and preparing progress reports and other grant-administration documents
  • Facilitate external communications with funders and internal collaborations with the EdWeek newsroom and other colleagues
  • Contribute to special projects as applicable to advance fundraising goals and Education Week's mission

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 1-3 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, education, or a related field
  • Strong verbal, written, analytic, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with database, workflow management, and donor relationship management applications; willingness and ability to learn new tools and technologies
  • Detail-oriented, deadline-focused, able to work independently with some supervision
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills with the demonstrated ability to prioritize, multi-task, problem-solve, and meet deadlines.

Preferred Skills

Some experience with grant fundraising (e.g., experience with grant administrative tasks)

Previous K-12 education experience and knowledge of current trends in K-12 education

Experience with Salesforce or other donor/customer relationship management platforms, workflow management applications (e.g., Jira, Foundation Directory Online, Adobe Analytics, and other digital tools (e.g. ZoomInfo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator)

Ability to leverage new technologies and tools to improve effectiveness

Proficiency with: Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and Access
