Position Summary: The Housing Specialist addresses the client’s housing needs in Nazareth Housing Emergency Family Shelter. The Housing Specialist assists clients as they transition from shelter to permanent housing. They are responsible for identifying permanent housing options, developing and maintaining a database of housing resources, conducting individual meetings and support groups around housing issues, and providing referrals, advocacy, follow-up, and assistance with housing applications. The Housing Specialist also develops partnerships with government and community agencies to help increase clients’ access to secure, stable, permanent housing.

Responsibilities for each family:

● Assess housing needs and develop an individualized plan to secure safe, affordable housing.

● Assist in securing and completing applications for permanent housing. Identify and assist in obtaining relevant documents needed for applications for permanent housing.

● Ensure all relevant housing applications are completed within 30 days of a family becoming eligible for shelter services and forwarded to their designated destination and that a copy is maintained in the case record.

● Utilizing the DHS Client Assistance and Re-housing Enterprise System (CARES) to ensure that all information is updated in the system in a timely fashion as required by DHS.

● Initiate, develop, and maintain relationships with housing resources and advocacy groups such as NYCHA, HPD, Section 8, Supportive Housing, and other organizations to share information on current and future housing resources and to assure that clients transition to permanent housing and reduce the length of stay.

● Conduct Housing Empowerment Workshops to empower residents in their search for permanent housing and to provide housing information.

● Guide and prepare clients for interviews with landlords, building managers, and tenant groups to ensure they can represent their interests in the search for permanent housing.

● Assist in viewing and inspecting available housing, both public and private, to ensure they are relocated to appropriate and code-compliant housing.

● Participate in training and staff-development activities to acquire and maintain interpersonal and operational skills necessary for successful job performance.

● Maintain an open line of communication with the Program Director and Chief Program Officer to resolve any issues that might prevent a client from securing permanent housing

● Ensure the timely collection, preparation, and analysis of re-housing information to generate

routine and as-needed reports.

● Perform other duties as assigned by Nazareth Housing administration.

Qualifications

● Strong commitment to Nazareth Housing's mission of serving underserved and vulnerable New Yorkers

● Associate degree in Social Work, Mental Health, Counseling Psychology, or related field.

● Three or more years of relevant professional experience in human services and housing.

● Excellent organizational, time-management, and written/verbal communication skills

● Motivated self-starter; comfortable working alone and in teams

● Excellent interpersonal skills with team members, volunteers, and clients are required.

● Bilingual English / Spanish preferred

● Experience with CARES, HOMES, CAPS, Foothold/Awards, Microsoft, and Google Drive.

● Understands the needs of low-income families and is comfortable working in a diverse setting.

● Demonstrated sensitivity and experience with and/or knowledge of domestic violence within and against disenfranchised communities, including individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or HIV-affected, the elderly, and individuals with mental health issues.

● Possess the knowledge and skills necessary to develop strong linkages with the city and private housing agencies and secure permanent housing for the homeless population.
