SUMMARY

The Social Services Advocate will provide support to adult and juvenile clients in various stages of legal representation. The Advocate works closely with clients and their families, particularly those with mental health issues or requiring additional support, to ensure comprehensive assistance and advocacy.

The Advocate conducts client interviews in various settings, including county jails, and creates detailed mitigation reports for adult clients. They also assist attorneys by identifying pre- and post-trial release options, treatment opportunities, probation or diversion conditions, sentencing, and post-sentencing options. Maintaining client records and other essential documentation is also a critical part of this role.

The Social Services Advocate is dedicated to supporting attorneys and clients, ensuring that individuals receive the necessary resources and advocacy throughout their legal proceedings.

Reports directly to the Chief of Policy and Social Services.

This is a grant-funded position with a guaranteed 12 months of funding. Any employee hired for this role should understand that continued employment will be contingent on renewed grant funding for the position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare mitigation reports and work with staff attorneys on sentencing issues;
  • Interviews clients and related parties, including face to face interviews in county jail and youth center;
  • Travel to meet clients at various residential placement centers in and around Montgomery County and Pennsylvania. Some travel to out of state placement facilities will be required;
  • Works with attorneys to locate and interview collateral witnesses as needed;
  • Collects and reviews client records;
  • Assists in making determinations to aid in disposition of juvenile and adult cases;
  • Maintains records of all clients in adult and juvenile database system;
  • Participates in various client meetings that impact public defender activities;
  • Participates in statistical projects annually to measure effectiveness of programs and activities;
  • Assist attorney staff in locating housing and treatment options for clients;
  • Perform additional duties as specified by the Chief Public Defender.

Education and Credentials
  • Bachelor's degree in a criminal justice or social services related field required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted;
  • Paralegal certificate (preferred but not required).
Experience and Skills
  • Basic computer literacy including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel required;
  • Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills required;
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred but not required;
  • Reliable transportation required.
