All activities must support the District of Columbia Housing Authority's (“DCHA” or “Authority’s”) strategic goals and objectives and produce results that accomplish the goals of Property Management Operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

GENERAL

  • Incumbent performs the full range of laboring duties in connection with the upkeep of structures and land within the City of D.C.;
  • Using rakes, shovels and brooms, clears lots, private alley spaces and yards of solid waste. Gathers solid waste, dirt, debris, etc., from rooms, halls and basements. Shovels snow from sidewalks;
  • Uses heavy walking type power mowers and swing blades to cut grass; adjusts mower blades; cleans and oils mowers; using hand trimmers, trims shrubbery;
  • Carries heating equipment, refrigerators, hot water tanks, sinks and heavy furniture; loads and unloads from trucks;
  • Assists tradesmen such as Electricians, Carpenters, Plumbers, Plasterers, Painters and Pest Controllers by carrying ladders, tools, equipment and materials; cleans work areas;
  • Loads and unloads trucks with tools, materials and equipment, including wood, wire, line, plaster, roofing compound and other heavy supplies and materials;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Competencies

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL
  • Ability to operate, control and clean heavy power equipment (e.g., heavy power mowers, chain saws, etc.) and to work safely with heavy tools
  • Ability to apply continual care and attention both to avoid accidents an to finish work properly
  • Ability to complete assignments involving several tasks or processes which require remembering directions, sequences, etc.


Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or GED

Due to field responsibility, incumbent must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s permit

Incumbent is subject to deployment within the District of Columbia Housing Authority.

This position is designated as essential.

The District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) conducts pre-employment screening on specified positions, which may include but is not limited to a criminal background check, drug and alcohol testing, verification of academic credentials, licenses, and certifications, and/or verification of work history.

Incumbent exerts heavy physical effort to doing such tasks when frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over fifty (50) pounds, running power mowers on grass or pushing heavy wheelbarrow loads of cement, etc. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Working conditions

Incumbent works outside in all types of weather conditions, and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty and noisy. The equipment, tools and tasks involved, frequently require special care to avoid serious injuries and frequently require the use of safety gloves, ear plugs or safety glasses.
