The Supervisor CLIA Lab guides, mentors, and directs our laboratory staff comprised of licensed and non-licensed individuals. The Supervisor CLIA Lab collaborates with laboratory management and fellow supervisors to ensure adequate laboratory staffing and efficient workflows. This position works to develop current team members and identify external talent to build up and strengthen our high performing team in a fun, supportive, diverse, and developmentally focused environment. While mostly a leadership role, the Supervisor CLIA Lab spends some time in the lab working with our highly automated testing platform to process patient samples.

Responsibility

Each employee's specific job responsibilities are uniquely defined by their individual training plan and assigned duties, but are generally defined as follows:

  1. Conduct daily supervision and oversight of laboratory staff and operation.
  2. Provide feedback and mentorship to direct reports.
  3. Monitor the training of laboratory personnel.
  4. Perform competency evaluations of laboratory personnel.
  5. Provide new employee orientation to new laboratory personnel.
  6. Assign laboratory responsibilities to personnel to ensure all tasks are properly performed.
  7. Work with our engineering team to troubleshoot instrument issues.
  8. Ensure all procedure deviations or instrumentation malfunctions and associated corrections are properly documented.
  9. Identify and report problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
  10. Ensure adherence to the laboratory's quality control policies.
  11. Assist with maintenance and updating of standard operation procedures.
  12. Communicate needs from the lab with employees from other departments.
  13. Work with the leadership team to assure compliance with applicable regulations.
  14. Process patient samples using our automated platform using independent judgement with minimal supervision.
  15. Perform setup, teardown, and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
Qualifications
  1. A valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or Clinical Genetics Molecular Biology Scientist license issued by the State of California.
  2. A BS, BA, or MS degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
  3. The following years of pertinent clinical lab experience obtained after licensure:
    1. BA or BS graduates: 4 years total.
    2. MS graduates: 4 years total.
    3. For BA, BS, or MS graduates: At least 2 years in a high complexity testing clinical laboratory.
  4. Experience in a clinical laboratory management or supervisory role is preferred.
  5. Prior experience with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based and/or next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods is preferred.
  6. Experience with laboratory operations and procedures.
  7. Accurate pipetting skills.
  8. A working understanding of good laboratory practices and regulatory compliance.
  9. The ability to adapt and be flexible in a fast-paced and evolving work environment.
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  11. Basic computer proficiency.

Physical Requirements

Lifting Requirements - light work or exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical Requirements - stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, and observing. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions.
