JOB DESCRIPTION

The Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologist I position works independently to complete a variety of routine diagnostic ultrasound procedures to include common and special ultrasound exams of moderate complexity. This position provides direct assistance to physicians with all diagnostic and special ultrasound procedures. The Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologist I position delivers exceptional patient care and adheres to ultrasound exam standards and guidelines established by governing agencies to ensure optimal patient safety and customer service. This position is a member of the direct patient care team.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Promotes a positive work environment.

  • Collaborates with all members of the patient care team.

  • Uses peer-to-peer accountability towards department goals for retention and employee engagement.

  • Guides and mentors Ultrasound students to help build confidence in skills, knowledge and abilities.

  • Utilizes active communication and reports pertinent patient care information in a comprehensive manner.

  • Proactive in responding to patient needs.

  • Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures to include common and special ultrasound exams of moderate complexity.

  • Optimizes protocols to provide better patient care, image quality and patient experience. This includes:positioning, physiology, procedure preparation and technical factors.

  • Assists physicians during diagnostic procedures or special ultrasound procedures, including assisting with sterile technique.

  • Utilizes AIDET incorporating Key Words and MANGAGE UP techniques, when speaking to patients and family members at an age-appropriate level.

  • Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures.

  • Complies with job role, department and hospital safety standards, practices and policies.

  • Participates in LEAN projects and WASTE walks, and contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety.

  • Reports near misses and inputs errors promptly into appropriate hospital patient safety reporting system to improve processes and identify trends.

  • Utilizes critical thinking skills to observe and proactively address patient reactions (i.e. contrast media and medications) or potential outcomes, as appropriate.

  • Ensures all imaging equipment has had quality control (QC) performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use.

  • Assists with implementation and education of department-based safety initiatives and standards of practice.

  • Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Enters charges at the time service is delivered.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.

  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially regarding activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.

  • Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems to include, Hospital / Radiology Information Systems and Office software to maintain patient and exam documents.

  • Exhibits strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.

  • Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision including, organizing workflow andactively participating in problem-solving.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT

  • Work attire is scrubs.

  • Equipment you will be using:

  • Ultrasonographic units of various vendors

  • Electronic Health Record

  • PACS

  • Employee may be asked to travel to other UTMB campuses.

  • Employees are required to participate in call, weekend, holiday, and disaster team rotations to include emergencies and severe weather.

  • May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, ionizing & non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications and disoriented or combative patients or others.

  • Must be able to push or pull a minimum of 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to walk long distances.

  • Must be able to stand for a continuous 60 minutes at a time.

The Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologist II position is an experienced technologist who completes a variety of routine to complex diagnostic ultrasound procedures to include common and special ultrasound exams of high difficulty. This position is a member of the direct patient care team and is fully competent in all aspects of ultrasound exams. The Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologist II position serves as a mentor and trainer to the Ultrasound Technologist I and students. This position works independently by exercising sound judgment and executing above average clinical skills on challenging diagnostic procedures. The Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologist II position provides direct assistance to physicians with all diagnostic andspecial ultrasound procedures. This position delivers exceptional patient care and adheres to ultrasound exam standards and guidelines established by governing agencies to ensure optimal patient safety and customerservice.
