Position Overview
At DCPS, educators are charged with ensuring the academic achievement of all our students regardless of background or circumstance. This position is a safety‐sensitive position. As a result, throughout employment this position will be subject to the Employee Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.
- Biomedical Sciences is one of 24 Career and Technical Education pathways in DCPS. The Certified Nursing Assistant program is designed to support the current Biomedical Sciences pathway by training students in the fundamentals of Nursing Assistants as outlined by the D.C. Department of Health, Board of Nursing. Curriculum topics are outlined below:
- Role of Nurse Assistant
- Legal and Ethical Duties
- Care sensitive to culture, religion, national origin, gender identity and sexual orientation
- Communication
- Basic Safety Skills
- Infection Prevention & Control
- Understanding basic human functioning and needs
- Promoting the resident’s independence with Personal care skills
- Promoting the resident’s independence with assistance in elimination
- Promoting the resident’s independence with Basic restorative skills
- Delegated nursing skills
- Taking and documenting Vital Signs
- Measuring and documenting resident’s weight and height
- Applying clean bandages
- Assisting with admitting, transferring, or discharging
- Giving assistance in resolving grievances and disputes
- Caring for clients with special needs
- Working with agitated or combative residents, including techniques useful in the prevention of abuse
- Restraints and limitations on use of restraints
- End of life care
- Preventing fatigue and burn-out
- Reporting incidents
The educator in this position will report to the NAF Academy of Health Sciences Director and school Principal.

- Incorporates technology daily while maintaining a safe and sanitary laboratory.
- Highlights pathways to become a health care professional after high school.
- Establishes and maintains positive contact with multiple contacts in relevant industries.
- Arranges industry exposure opportunities for students such as field trips, guest presentations, job shadow experiences, internships, etc.
- Coordinates with the DCPS Career Education team to order equipment, maintain accurate inventory, and advocate for material needs of the program.
- Sets and reinforces clear expectations and routines that are aligned with the school’s overall vision.
- Develops and implements curricula and activities to meet academic standards.
- Thoughtfully plans daily lessons and implements specific strategies to meet the needs of all students, providing extra support, enrichment, or variation of work when necessary.
- Demonstrates strong content knowledge.
- Designs and implements assessments that measure progress towards academic standards and diagnoses areas of student misunderstanding.
- Uses assessment data to refine curriculum and informs instructional practices.
- Be accountable for students’ academic growth and increase each individual student’s achievement. Creates a positive, achievement‐oriented learning environment.
- Reflects on successes and areas of growth as an educator, seeks to improve performance, and responds to feedback.
- Participates in collaborative curriculum development and grade‐level activities.
- Invests parents and families in their children’s academic success through regular communication.
Qualifications
The Nurse Educator will be responsible for teaching and coordinating the CNA course/program as well as overseeing the students’ clinical laboratory and practicum hours. The nurse educator will also handle other administrative duties as described by the District of Columbia Board of Nursing. The position will be renewed annually. Other requirements of the candidate are as follows:
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Master's Degree preferred.
- Registered Nurse licensure in the District of Columbia
- Proficient in the use of simulation equipment, lab procedures, technology, etc. required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of full-time or full-time equivalent experience as an RN with clinical experience in the clinical practice setting
- Must have completed a course in teaching adults or have experience in teaching adults and supervising nursing assistants
- Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, providing direct patient care during the five (5) years immediately preceding the date of the written agreement.
