The Student Success Center (SSC) unit of the CAS Dean's Office is committed to providing advisement and academic services to support the success and retention of all students in the college, and to providing collaborative support to faculty and staff who serve as advisors to undergraduates in the college. Under the general direction of an assigned Academic Program Manager (APM) in the Assistant Dean’s Office in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), Student Success Center (SSC), the Academic Advisor II role will be responsible for the academic advisement of current CAS students, as well as providing advising and support to incoming students during New Student Orientation (NSO). The Academic Advisor II will work cooperatively with other members of the CAS faculty and staff, and other on-campus units, and maintain regular contact with academic departments at the University in order to provide accurate information to students pursuing undergraduate degrees in the college. The Academic Advisor II is responsible for providing academic advisement to CAS’s undergraduate student population and will be assigned to serve students within designated CAS academic departments The Academic Advisor II assists with programs and events for prospective students, as well as with programs and advisement for entering freshmen and transfer students, providing advisement and support to these student populations during their first two years beginning with NSO. The position will also assist in verifying accuracy of degree audits and program requirements. The Academic Advisor II works closely with and directly reports to an Academic Program Manager (APM) in CAS, SSC, to address student issues and concerns, and to verify that advising policies and procedures are being followed. Major Responsibilities: · Provide advisement services to CAS undergraduates, both freshmen and transfers, beginning at NSO and continuing through the completion of 60 credits or during the first semester if transferring in more than 60 credits. Advisement services include guiding students to formulate educational goals and to make appropriate educational decisions to reach their goals. · Provide course recommendations to students using departmental four-year plans, the undergraduate catalog, and other academic-related resources as a guide, facilitating timely degree completion, student success, and UD’s “Finish in Four” initiative. · Monitor the progress of assigned student populations and conduct outreach about advisement, especially to those in special academic circumstances, to improve graduation and retention rates. · Utilize the Student Success Collaborative (SSC) retention platform, Blue Hen Success Collaborative (BHSC), to note advisement interactions, schedule advisement appointments, conduct targeted advising campaigns, and conduct proactive, targeted outreach to specific student populations. · Maintain regular contact with other academic units for the purpose of collaboration and sharing academic information. · Coordinate academic advisement with other campus units and refer students to appropriate academic/student service departments and support services. · Interpret policy, explain GPA and academic standing, review transfer credits, and provide guidance on majors, minors, and other related academic matters. · Audit degree program requirements for individual students and disseminate accurate and up-to-date academic information and policies to students, faculty, and others. · Work with Academic Program Managers, Assistant Deans, faculty, and staff members to explain and interpret academic policies, and train new advisors on program requirements, curriculum, and policy. · Provide information and referrals to students seeking assistance due to academic concerns. · Provide support and referral services to students, working with offices such as the Office of the Dean of Students, the Office of Student Conduct, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Career Services Center, the Office of Admissions, and the Office of Residence Life and Housing. · Participate in and support recruitment via admission and pre-admission activities. · Assist in the development and coordination of a variety of academic-related programs and workshops. · Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Qualifications: · Bachelor’s degree, master's degree rereferred, and three years of academic advising experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in student personnel, college counseling or related field preferred · Experience in serving and advising large, diverse groups of student populations in a wide array of programs preferred. · Effective leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. · Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records. · Ability to present effectively to small and large groups. · Ability to work productively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. · Ability to grasp, retain, and disseminate an extensive and varied body of information. · Ability to exercise sound judgment and employ decision making skills. · Knowledge of academic standards governing student probation, suspension, and/or expulsion and student recruitment and retention issues. · Ability to communicate with students about their course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements. · Advanced working knowledge of advisement policies, procedures, systems, regulations, and standards at the university level. · Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data. · Proficient computer skills including use of presentation software and Excel. Experience with PeopleSoft (and/or UD’s system, UDSIS) and retention or student success software (such as Student Success Collaborative) preferred. · Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds. · Committed to fostering a workplace culture of belonging, where diversity is celebrated and equity is a core value.
