Summary:
Reports directly to the assigned sponsoring Cardiologist for clinical activities with a dotted line administrative reporting relationship to the Director Administrative Operations. Performs a variety of duties to encompass but not limited to the care and management of electrophysiology patients especially those with devices in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospitals mission vision and values. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age-specific needs of the patients.
Responsibilities:
Obtains medical histories and performs and records physical examinations. Records pertinent progress notes in the medical records and develops treatment plans. In addition the Nurse Practitioner will initiate life-saving measures in emergency situations.
Assesses patient status and participates in the development of a patient care management plan with the attending physician. Provides educational and liaison supports to health care team members.
Participates in the care of electrophysiology outpatient ambulatory care patients by providing consults and re-evaluations in addition to urgent outpatient evaluations.
Responsible for routine and problematic cardiac device evaluations and reprogramming evaluating and treating arrhythmias evaluating and treating other symptomatic cardiac patients both urgent and non-urgent and preparing patients for upcoming device upgrades and generator changes including extractions and revisions. May also assist with invasive/non-invasive diagnostics conducted by a supervising physician in the electrophysiology laboratory.
Participates in the education of patients families and caregivers regarding any procedures post-procedural care and expected outcomes and progress.
May perform other duties as requested by the attending physician within the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice.
Participates in quality improvement teams clinical research projects and other committees as needed.
Maintains quality assurance safety and environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital/department policies procedures and objectives.
Other information:
Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Graduate of Nurse Practitioner program with MS degree. Current RI NP license that includes prescriptive privileges. Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) to practice in the expanded role. Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required. Demonstrates clinical expertise in cardiology.
EXPERIENCE:
Clinical experience as a nurse practitioner for two years is preferred. Must have patient care services procedures and privileges approved by the sponsoring physician.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Healthcare environment such as acute care hospital physician office and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including the use of safety equipment and protective clothing.
