This position will be dedicated to the Violence Prevention Villages (VPV) project that aims to provide positive, proactive and preventive upstream supports and services to youth Pr ek - 8 and their households. BUILD partners with schools to improve behavioral, social/emotional and school outcomes for students, and we engage the nonprofit ecosystem to support household wellbeing and stability. We follow and support youth and households as long as they are willing, and aim to improve long term well-being, educational attainment and economic stability across generations.

The Community Liaison will be responsible for outreach activities for the VPV. They will conduct outreach to assigned households to identify areas of need, build positive, supportive relationships with household members. The Community Liaison will conduct and attend outreach events individually and with other members of the BUILD staff. They will travel to homes to meet with household members, and coordinate with other VPV site staff at a Chicago Public School to access services or support needed by members of the household. The Community Liaison is responsible for building trusting relationships with household members and community institutions and transferring those relationships to other BUILD staff.

Work will primarily take place at in the Austin community, as well as at the BUILD campus, in the homes and other locations as needed. The Community Liaison reports directly to the Manager of Violence Prevention Villages.

Responsibilities include:

Relationship Building and Assessment:
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with targeted households and lead members
  • Conduct home visits and leverage BUILD, school and community events to engage household members
  • Assess household needs and work with VPV team to provide necessary resources
  • In collaboration with the VPV Manager, conduct CARE team/Case review team meetings to engage BUILD staff, relevant school staff and others as appropriate to conduct shared assessment and planning for maximum benefit to the youth and household/household members
  • Identify gaps in service array and work with VPV Manager and/or other BUILD staff to build new partners to address those gaps
  • Support warm hand offs to referral parties, including attending initial calls or visits with household members
  • Identify opportunities to improve referral or resource utilization by household members
Documentation and Competencies:
  • Contributes to client related data systems for record keeping and reporting purposes
  • Contributes to reports as required per grant
  • Operates professionally in the field on a flexible schedule, which may include evenings and weekends
  • Completes all assessments, service plans, case notes and any other significant program data within a timely manner
  • Maintains all forms required, including case notes, referral forms, information releases related to health or disabling conditions, health information, and any other information necessary in program participants file utilizing all procedures related to maintaining confidentiality at all times
Communication and relationship management:
  • Establishes a regular schedule of classroom and/or home visits, contacts, and follow-ups to encourage the building of relationships with participants
  • Maintains active, open and consistent communication with school counselor and other appropriate school staff to allow for aligned services to youth and their household members
  • Represents BUILD to broaden community awareness and support, interpreting the agency's programs and services at program-related community, coalition and committee meetings as needed
  • Attends departmental and agency-wide staff meetings, as scheduled and agency-wide events, as required
  • Maintains knowledge current in the field in way of participation of coursework, seminars and/or workshops
Other:
  • Participate in VPV learning loop feedback sessions to improve the program model on an ongoing basis
  • Participate in agency-wide fundraising events
  • Participate in agency outreach and recruitment events, including evenings and weekends
  • Participate in civic engagement activities that advance the mission of BUILD, Inc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of and history in the community of Austin, include a preexisting network of relationships among various blocks, families and institutions
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • An automobile is required along with current insurance and a valid driver's license
  • Maintain respectful and appropriate relationships with program participants, all levels of agency staff and the various publics of the agency, demonstrating sensitivity to all ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds
  • Must be willing to travel as needed
  • Must be passionate about youth development work
  • Must successfully pass extensive background check
