The Part-Time Controller will be responsible for managing all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting and compliance to ensure the organization's financial health. This position is ideal for a professional who has a passion for nonprofit work and is looking to contribute their expertise to a meaningful cause on a part-time basis.

Part-Time Controller Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all financial operations including accounting, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Manage cash flow, accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director and department heads
  • Monitor budget performance and prepare variance analyses to provide insights and recommendations
  • Develop financial forecasts and projections to guide strategic decision-making
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations, including IRS reporting requirements for nonprofit organizations
  • Prepare for and coordinate annual audits, working closely with external auditors
  • Maintain and update internal controls to safeguard the organization's assets and ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Oversee grant accounting, including tracking of expenditures, preparing financial reports and ensuring compliance with grant requirements
  • Assist in the preparation of grant budgets and financial narratives for grant proposals
  • Supervise payroll processing, ensuring timely and accurate payroll transactions
  • Oversee benefits administration and ensure compliance with relevant regulations

Part-Time Controller Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related business field
  • 5+ years of experience in overseeing an accounting process within a nonprofit environment
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks
  • Experience with grant management and compliance
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • This position is based in downtown Chicago on a hybrid schedule
  • The role requires a schedule of 25 hours per week that must be completed during a traditional Monday-Friday, 8-5pm schedule
