Our client is seeking a highly motivated Controller or Senior Controller to join a dynamic biotech team in Chicago. This role is ideal for a finance professional with extensive experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, particularly those who have supported a start-up company’s transition from private to public and from early to late-phase clinical programs.


Position Overview: As a Controller or Senior Controller, you will be a key member of the finance organization, responsible for managing a wide range of financial functions and ensuring the company's financial health. You will play a critical role in driving financial strategy, overseeing general accounting, financial planning and analysis, vendor management, treasury, risk management, and compliance.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Budget and Forecast Management: Oversee the budget and forecast processes, including analysis, preparation, and communication of financial results to the leadership team.
  • Cash Flow Management: Forecast cash flows, arrange funds, and ensure sufficient liquidity for smooth operations.
  • Accounting and Regulatory Activities: Perform or coordinate with external firms for all accounting and regulatory activities, including technical accounting, audit, tax, management reporting, treasury operations, company registrations, and insurance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with various functions to identify and deliver actionable insights and strategies, drive performance, maintain fit-for-purpose processes, and advance enterprise initiatives.
  • Audit Leadership: Lead the audit process, interfacing with external auditors to ensure a timely, transparent, and complete audit outcome.
  • Cost Savings and Risk Management: Assess financial records to discover cost-saving methods and minimize risk.
  • Internal Controls: Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure regulatory compliance, creating and strengthening internal policies as needed.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay updated on relevant accounting standards and regulatory changes impacting the biotech industry.
  • External Relations: Maintain effective relationships with credit rating agencies, bankers, lenders, and manage investments and debt. Assist the executive team in making finance-related decisions.
  • IPO Readiness: Ensure IPO readiness by preparing financial documentation and disclosures in compliance with SEC regulations and GAAP standards. Support due diligence efforts and interface with external stakeholders.


Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA certification preferred.
  • Experience: Extensive experience (8+ years) in financial management, accounting, or auditing roles, with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Skills: Strong analytical and financial skills, excellent communication, and the ability to simplify complexity and influence decision-making.
  • Biopharma Experience: Experience supporting a start-up biopharmaceutical company’s successful IPO process.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility and willingness to take on new responsibilities and assist with various ad-hoc projects as needed.
