About Esperanza Education Fund

The Esperanza Education Fund (EEF)  is a volunteer-run college scholarship and mentorship program for immigrant students in the DC Metro Area. Founded in 2009 by a diverse group of young professionals, we have awarded over a million dollars in scholarships to promising first-generation and native-born students, and matched them with mentors in their respective fields. Unlike most programs of its kind, the Esperanza Education Fund is open to all immigrant students, regardless of ethnicity, national origin, or immigration status. We are looking for passionate and committed individuals to join our volunteer Board for the term beginning August 2024. We are specifically recruiting for three (3) Board Member positions including: Treasurer (1), Development Chair (1), and General Board Member (1)

Our Current State:

This year marks Esperanza’s fifteen year anniversary. We are in a moment of strategic review, where we are revamping the organization’s operating structures to prepare ourselves for the next 15 years of transformational impact on the lives of our Scholars. We are at a point of critical management and fundraising need, to be able to thrive beyond 2025.  The new Board Members will be stepping into well-established systems (highlighted below) tempered by an immediate need to to deliver on our fundraising goals and build up our board capacity. 

Our strengths:

  • Fundraising: We are executing on our strategic fundraising plan with the support of a proven professional fundraiser. We need additional board members to meet our annual goal. 
  • Board: A collegial, dedicated all-volunteer Board that is currently two members (due to unforeseen events, unrelated to EEF) though it has historically been six to seven members.
  • Staff: Two part-time contractors who have each been with the organization for over three years, capable and ready to support new leadership. They include a Program & Communications Manager and a Director of Operations & Finance.
  • Scholars: 30+ current Scholars, enrolled and thriving in college, to whom we have committed 2 or 4-year scholarship awards and mentorship support.
  • Volunteers: A cadre of engaged volunteers who have supported EEF activities over its fifteen years.

Board Member Responsibilities:

  • Uphold EEF’s mission and purpose and define the strategies and programs to do so
  • Specifically, participation in board meetings, events, activities, and/or committees:
  • Participation in Quarterly Board Meetings and an additional annual  meeting (five total)
  • Participation in three in-person and/or  virtual engagements with the EEF community
  • Oversee the work of EEF’s contractors and consultants, ensuring commitment to EEF’s mission and purpose
  • Define and execute strategies for organizational sustainability and conduct active fundraising throughout the year
  • Vote on all Board business
  • Promote EEF externally 
  • Support EEF through Board member resources and expertise 

[Treasurer Responsibilities] Financial Management, Oversight, and Reporting 

  • In addition to general board strategy, governance, voting, and participation:
  • General oversight of organizational financial management, including bank accounts, QuickBooks, and development of annual budget and  financial reports
  • Directly manages the Director of Finance & Operations or stands-in for the position
  • Review and approval of invoice payments and scholarship disbursements
  • Approval of Esperanza’s tax filing 

[Development Chair Responsibilities] Development Strategy, Execution, and Oversight

  • In addition to general board strategy, governance, voting, and participation:
  • Collaborate with Fundraising Consultant (when contracted) to define fundraising strategy
  • Actively participate in and ensure execution of fundraising activities across the Board
  • Directly manages any temporary Fundraising Consultant

Requirements:

Commitment

  • Estimated time commitment: 5 - 10 hours/month depending on role and committee needs
  • Minimum commitment requirement is one three-year term (Aug 2024 - Dec 2026) [2024 is a truncated year]
  • Annual commitment to donate or secure donations for EEF
  • Board members must be located in the DC metro area although Board and committee meetings take place virtually

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Associates Degree from an accredited college or university
  • 5+ years of experience in any related area of expertise

Skills/Abilities

  • Proven collaboration skills; strong team builder and team member
  • Demonstrated effectiveness, preferably in advancing the mission of a non-profit
  • Familiarity with social impact, education opportunity, and/or immigrant rights work
  • Ability to seek support on behalf of Esperanza; great communication skills preferred
  • Leadership skill
