Transportation Support Specialist

Reports To: Director of Transportation
Schedule: 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week / 52-week position
Pay Grade: Grade 5, Step 1, $19.05 per hour
Job Summary: The Transportation Support Specialist works to coordinate activities related to accomplishing the goals of the transportation department and the district.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree OR not less than five (5) years of pertinent, practical experience
- Demonstrated strong skill sets in the above referenced areas preferably in a pupil transportation environment
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills with great attention to detail
- Demonstrated knowledge in all aspects of pupil transportation preferred including but not limited to the following:
- Transportation laws, rules & regulations
- Common industry standards of operations
- Proper procedures for all types of bus stops
- Proper placement of stops and vehicle positioning at bus stops
- Best practices relative to school bus routing procedures, traffic safety and motor vehicle code
- Demonstrated advanced skill sets with technology tools including Windows-based programs (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations). Working knowledge of Google applications preferred or the willingness and ability to learn
- Demonstrated skills using Student Transportation, powered by Traversa or similar software, PowerSchool, and School Messenger preferred as well as adept at logistics and planning

- Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work under pressure
- Demonstrated good attendance and punctuality

- Possess or be willing to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, Chauffeur, Class B, with Passenger and School Bus endorsements (CDL, CB, PS)
- Demonstrated experience in multiple areas of pupil transportation a plus
- Create and maintain school bus routes following industry safety standards using Student Transportation, powered by Traversa.
- Create forms to collect and track information from parents and school staff for providing various transportation services.
- Maintain district demographics and the district's street directory index.
- Maintain GIS Map upgrades, track information regarding new developments, and make recommendations for implementation of new routes and/or stops. This includes working with our software provider to facilitate map upgrades within the software used for routing and planning.
- Maintain student and transportation data, processing the data between PowerSchool and Traversa software.
- Assist with emergency situations during dispatch of the bus fleet, over the telephone and two-way radio.
- Assist with scheduling buses for athletic and scholastic field trips for all schools as needed.
- Receive and field phone calls as front-line customer service and dispatch bus fleet over two-way radio system.
- Receive and process information relative to daily route coverage/operations and schedule driver activities and substitute bus driver assignments on a daily basis.
- Assist with the daily office operations including organizing, scheduling drivers and other fleet activities.
- Serve as backup for processing and maintaining payroll for the department.
- Support and assist the Director of Transportation and the Transportation Coordinator with various administrative tasks.
- Utilize multiple technology platforms associated with pupil transportation.
- Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents and the community in positive, supportive, and cooperative ways.
- Consistent and reliable attendance
- Perform other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; bend; twist; stretch; drive; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, and the ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration when driving the bus. Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work may be performed indoors and/or outdoors in a variety of weather elements.
Mental Functions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
