Overview: We are seeking an R&D Associate Staff who will support the Grid Communications and Security Group (GCS) in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division (EEID), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to perform R&D in the areas of wireless communications and signal processing for IoT and V2X networks and data analytics for power grid disturbance error modeling, detection and classification. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated and independent in conducting research under general guidance and is expected to submit proposals and prepare manuscripts for scientific publication and present the work to sponsors and at conferences.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects at the intersection of these technologies and to collaborate with professionals across the Laboratory to advance the field of data analytics, networking, security, and embedded systems. The GCS group focuses on modeling and data analytics for grid anomalies/disturbances, sensor development, embedded systems, physical layer security R&D specifically related to grid infrastructure.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • R&D on data analytics and machine learning for grid disturbances and applied signal processing algorithms for next generation grid and xG connectivity.
  • Develop simulation models, test/validate new detection and classification algorithms for grid disturbances and publish research outcomes.
  • Develop simulation models, test/validate new waveform, physical layer security algorithms for next generation grid connectivity and publish research outcomes.
  • Prepare proposals and associated materials to advance new ideas and opportunities.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Work cooperatively while advancing the standing of the group through collaborations, professional society memberships, and technical presentations.
  • Stay up to date on new and emerging technologies and identify opportunities to apply them in a research and development environment.
Basic Qualifications :
  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering or related engineering / scientific discipline
  • Expertise in developing and implementing machine learning algorithms for real-time data analysis and anomaly detection.
  • Strong understanding of physical layer security challenges and potential solutions in the IoT and V2X communication space.
  • Experience with the development and deployment of embedded systems, IoT solutions, and V2X communication systems.
  • The candidate should have excellent oral skills to make presentations and written communication skills to prepare reports and proposals.
  • Demonstrated expertise with digital signal processing in the time- and frequency-domain.
  • Experience with RF signals analysis and wireless networks.
  • Experience with power grid disturbance signals analysis.
  • Experience with scientific analysis and programming software such as C, Python, MATLAB, or comparable equivalent
  • A background in productive and creative research efforts, exemplified by peer-reviewed IEEE journal publications.
  • Previous experience working at a national laboratory
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong track record of leading teams responsible for the development, implementation, and deployment of physical security, embedded systems, IoT, mobile networks and V2X communication solutions and power grid waveform data analysis.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
