Veterans Community Project (VCP) Overview

Founded in 2016 in Kansas City, MO, VCP is dedicated to supporting every man and woman who took the oath to defend our nation. The greatest barrier to ending Veteran homelessness is the revolving door of unstable housing and the frustrating maze Veterans must navigate in order to get basic support. We believe that to be an effective program, the first step is to connect Veterans and the community. VCP created an innovative homeless housing program and outreach assistance that provides inclusive services to aid Veterans in re-claiming control over their lives. 

The Team

We, the team members and co-founders of VCP, are connectors, feelers, and doers on a mission to help our kin, our kind. We move with swift, bold action, driven by our mission. We believe in collaboration, community, compassion, and above all, serving Veterans with dignity and respect.

The Role

The Director of Accounting will plan and direct the accounting operations of the company; develop dynamic reports and provide research that supports finance goals; and develop best practices to optimize efficiencies. She/he will work closely with the CFO related to management of the accounting and finance systems in order to achieve our finance goals and the VCP mission. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk. 
  • Provides comprehensive financial updates to executive team; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles and other required financial reporting standards.  
  • Oversees the production of capital campaign reports; ensures that the reported results and future estimates are accurate by working closely with national expansion and local teams.  
  • Recommends and monitors benchmarks used to measure the company’s performance. 
  • Produces the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management. 
  • Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on capital projects. 
  • Audits accounts to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations; coordinates with outside auditors and provides needed information for the annual external audit. 
  • Responsible for tax planning throughout the fiscal year; coordinates annual corporate tax return filing for for-profit and not-for-profit entities. 
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements. 
  • Communicate with external and internal stakeholders over the phone and in person to support all teams.  
  • Foster relationships with other departments at VCP to build a cooperative and effective program and promote a culture of philanthropy. 
  • Be able to share the VCP story and Mission Statement. 
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.  

Competencies and Areas of Expertise should Include: 

  • Passion for the mission of VCP. 
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration, with 5 or more years experience in a management role. 
  • Experience with not-for-profit accounting and intercompany transactions and reconciliations is preferred. 
  • Advanced knowledge of general ledger software is required (ie: Microsoft Dynamics, Intacct) 
  • Advanced knowledge of CRM software (ie: Raiser’s Edge, Virtuous, Salesforce) is preferred. 
  • Advanced knowledge of technical computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), including ability to utilize technology for research. 
  • Ability to express ideas and facts in a clear and understandable manner appropriate for the individual or group; listens to and comprehends what others are saying; has demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of sensitive and confidential issues and communicate effectively with a diverse group of donors, volunteers, and staff. 
  • Must possess intellectual curiosity and a desire to continuously learn and grow as well as curiosity to understand how your job impacts the work of others.  Self-motivated to set, attain, and surpass goals, with minimal supervision. 
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality of information, records, and materials. 
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external constituents.  
  • Flexibility is a key attribute for this position. VCP is a fast-paced environment. A willingness to take on additional duties, or change course quickly, to ensure the success of the organization is essential.  
  • Must have organizational skills and attention to details.  Must have the ability to manage projects, workload, and engage constructively with the other members of the VCP team.
