QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Master's degree from a recognized, accredited college or university, with a valid Texas Certificate as a Professional School Counselor;
  2. A minimum of two (2) years of successful experience as a classroom teacher is required;
  3. A minimum of three (3) years of successful experience as a counselor is preferred;
  4. Visionary leadership in public schools to work with faculties, families, and communities of the 21st century.
  5. Graduate of the Counselor Leadership Institute preferred.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Probationary/Term Contract: Middle School 200 days

Salary: $66,990 (IA-3) with an additional stipend

Salary Range (based on experience) as set by the Board of Trustees

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Coordinating Counselor - Middle School
  1. Assists in planning and developing the school's, guidance and counseling program in relation to the needs of the students being served.
  2. Processes student registration for new students to the district, prior to the beginning of the school term and throughout the school year, as well as complete pre-registration for the subsequent year.
  3. Conducts registration conferences with parents and students new to the district for placement decisions, easing the transition, and understanding building and district policies.
  4. Determines placement for students in courses and special programs and updates students' schedules to reflect such placement.
  5. Makes schedule changes to accommodate individual student needs.
  6. Maintains individual cumulative folders containing standardized test data, grades, home language surveys, and other pertinent data that may assist the student.
  7. Administers and/or supervises the administration of the standardized testing programs of the district and the state.
  8. Interprets results of tests to students, parents, and professional personnel.
  9. Acts as a liaison with all support personnel.
  10. Coordinates the Special Education Referral Process and writes the referral committee report.
  11. Uses computers in job-related activities.
  12. Assists in the preparation of written reports or surveys that are required by the local school system and/or the Texas Education Agency.
  13. Attends meetings: Counselor, Administrative, Departmental, and Faculty.
  14. Attends conferences and workshops as recommended by the administration.
  15. Provides individual guidance programs with an emphasis on learning appropriate behavior and aiding personal and social development.
  16. Conducts group guidance programs including orientation, educational, vocational, and career planning.
  17. Counsels and serves as a resource person for parents on problems affecting the orderly educational, physical, emotional, and social growth of the student.
  18. Provides crisis counseling and/or consultant services.
  19. Follows up with detention and suspension students by reviewing inappropriate behaviors with the students.
  20. Schedules and attends parent-teacher conferences and student-teacher conferences.
  21. Assists in the classroom and/or behavioral management planning with parents and school professional personnel.
  22. Consults with the school psychologist on identified students and coordinate the referral process for psychological services.
  23. Explains the role of counselors to appropriate agencies, the community, and to school staff members - public relations.
  24. Plans, conducts, and/or assists with staff development programs for campus-based and district-wide personnel when appropriate.
  25. Organizes and conducts parent study groups when there is an interest or need.
  26. Works cooperatively with elementary school counselors to ease the transition from elementary school to middle school. Collaborates with high school counselors for the appropriate placement of students and to ease the transition from middle school to senior high school.
  27. Works closely with the school psychologist, homebound teachers, diagnostician, attendance officer, Youth Service Specialist, and all ancillary personnel to help students with specific problems.
  28. Serves as chairperson for Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
  29. Works collaboratively with and coordinates the use of community referral sources in the prevention and/or intervention of pregnancy, drugs, child abuse, school dropouts, and runaways.
  30. Disseminates information to students and parents regarding summer school and other alternative means of education.
  31. Reports suspected child abuse to Children's Protective Services and to the district Youth Service Specialists. Checks on the progress of these cases.
  32. Assists the principal with Awards Night activities.
  33. Fosters team building among counselors. Encourages their active involvement in the decision-making process.
  34. Provides two-way communication with campus principal, staff, students, parents, and community.
  35. Communicates and promotes expectations for high-level performance to counselors and students. Recognizes excellence and achievements.
  36. Ensures the effective and quick resolution of conflicts.
  37. Identifies, analyzes, and applies research findings to promote school improvement.
  38. Assists with interviewing, selecting, and orientation of new counselors.
  39. Observes counselor performance, record observations, and contribute to the annual evaluation of counselors on campus.
  40. Supervises operations in the counseling office.
  41. Complies with district policies and state and federal laws and regulations. Trains campus counselors and ensures their strict adherence to the policies, laws, and regulations.
  42. Displays excellent skills with the use of technology.
