Position Summary

The Camp Counselor participates in the implementation of Girl Scout programming, ensures safety of the campers, and encourages the success of every camper. Camp Counselors are the primary caregivers for campers during camp. The Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, carrying out activities, and guiding campers in their personal growth. The position is also responsible for implementation of high-quality climbing wall, low ropes and/or archery programming.

El Ranchito Day Camp

Tucked away in the charming suburbs of Long Beach, El Ranchito is a tree-lined high adventure day camp, where campers are encouraged to take safe risks that boost bravery and promote goal setting. Exciting, confidence-building outdoor activities include archery, low ropes, and a 32-foot climbing tower.

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.
    • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
    • Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
    • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
  2. Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
    • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
    • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
    • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
    • Assist in program areas such as archery, climbing wall and low ropes and all camp activities, as directed.
  3. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
    • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
    • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health and Inclusion Specialist.
    • Be alert to campers' and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with the Health and Inclusion Specialist and/or Outdoor Program Supervisor when appropriate.
    • Establish and monitor safety procedures for archery, climbing wall and low ropes course program according to Girl Scout and ACA standards including the training of campers.
    • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the Camp Experience Manager.
  4. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  5. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver (as needed) evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
    • Attend and participate in daily meetings.
    • Provide check in/out support and provide outstanding customer service to families.
  6. Responsible for taking care of special programming equipment and supplies.
    • Set up and break down climbing wall, low ropes and/or archery range in orderly fashion including the maintenance of accurate inventories of supplies and equipment.
    • Evaluates and reports as requested by the Camp Experience Manager or other administrative staff.
  7. Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must be 18 years of age or be a high school graduate by the start of camp.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks of day camp (June 18, 2025 - August 22, 2025) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position's employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Must hold current archery and/or high ropes certifications or willing to obtain by the start of camp. Trainings will be available.
  • Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
