Description

The Mental Health Specialist offers mental health assessment and support for families in the Sokol Place Emergency Shelter. Provides hands-on assistance with connection to outpatient services and responding to mental health crises as they arise. Works closely with community providers to connect individuals with quality services which are sensitive to the needs of individuals who are experiencing homelessness and are living in poverty. The Mental Health Specialist also consults with designated staff regarding the mental health needs of their Participants, using their clinical expertise to guide decisions pertaining to each Participants' unique mental health needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Model positive and nurturing behavior at all times, interacting in a fair and meaningful way. Stimulate positive (non-abusive) behavior between the parents and their children.
  • Complete Mental Health intake for all families in Sokol Place.
  • Provide crisis intervention counseling to adults and children when needed.
  • Complete ASQ developmental screening for eligible children residing in Sokol Place ages 0-4.
  • Meets with family case managers or other designated staff at least monthly, lending their clinical expertise to problem-solve Participant's mental health needs.
  • When appropriate, partners with staff to refer families for complete psychological and psychiatric assessments, counseling, mental health skill-building and in-home services.
  • Provide direct support for families to access outpatient services.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with community mental health providers.
  • Coordinate mental health services with collaborating agencies.
  • Provide individual parenting consultation as needed.
  • Develop and facilitate psychoeducational groups for emergency shelter Participants.
  • Provide task supervision to program interns as needed.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and services team meetings.
RESPONSIBILITIES as MHS for Teen Program
  • Foster a safe and fun environment while facilitating agency rules and policies.
  • Provide crisis intervention and conflict solution.
  • Interact with parents using tact and sensitivity, maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Provide individual and group support as needed for behavior interventions including follow up with staff and parents.
  • Provides support to summer programming weekly.
Customer Service:
  • Provide service to internal and external customers according to standards as outlined in ForKids Customer CARE Manual.
Financial Management:
  • Use agency resources (financial and non-financial) prudently.
  • Acknowledge and follow the financial policies of the agency.
Grants Data Management:
  • Accurately complete all required data reporting in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Participate in all scheduled data collection trainings.
Community Engagement:

Participate in development and fundraising activities as needed and requested (ex: meeting with donors, providing tours, attending fundraising events).

Qualifications

Education and Experience:Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Human Services, Social Work, or Psychology. Master's degree and experience with providing clinical services preferred.

Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of clinical diagnostic methods and approved modalities of counseling.
  • Knowledge of interviewing methods and techniques.
  • Ability to identify and assess mental health symptoms.
  • Skill in use of crisis intervention techniques.
  • Experience working with trauma.
  • Knowledge of state and local ordinances and policies regarding mental health counseling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with a service team or independently as needed.
  • Valid driver's license with no more than three minor moving violations and/or accidents combined within the last 3 years, and no major moving violations in the past five years and ability to transport Participants in own vehicle as needed.
