General Summary:

Under general supervision evaluates, diagnoses, and treats speech and/or language impairments of students identified under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Plans instructional goals consistent with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEP's). Considers educational, medical, social, and psychological factors associated with speech and/or language impairments. Assists in other school and district programs as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, administrators, colleagues and other stakeholders to foster student learning.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning environment for all students.
  • Screens/tests for speech, language, voice, and/or fluency impairments as required.
  • Recommends placement of students in speech and/or language programs.
  • Plans and implements therapy consistent with goals in IEP's to develop concepts and skills in speech and/or language through individual and group therapy sessions; organizes therapy room for daily therapy activities; demonstrates a variety of 21st century teaching skills promote speech and/or language progress.
  • Communicates to parent "at home" steps to assist in treatment.
  • Explains, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual/specialized equipment to provide therapy to students.
  • Selects and requests therapy, assessment and instructional supplies necessary for daily activities; maintains an inventory of supplies and materials needed for therapy activities and screening/ testing.
  • Maintains daily therapy logs as required by The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Lexington County School District One.
  • Provides guidance and counseling to speech and/or language impaired students and recommends interventions as appropriate.
  • Evaluates progress of students in concepts and skills of speech and/or language.
  • Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; analyzes assessment data in relation to student learning and develops instructional strategies to close the learning and performance gap.
  • Prepares various records and forms such as therapy activity plans, daily therapy logs, testing/screening reports, Medicaid documentation, speech intervention documentation, etc.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings speech-language conferences, and speech-language training workshops.
  • Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
  • Meets with teachers, parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, activities, etc.; issues reports as specified by district policies to inform parents of student progress.
  • Cooperates with public and private agencies, organizations, and professional personnel in providing services for students with speech and/or language Impairments.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education/Work Experience:
  • Master's degree in speech/language pathology or an advanced program approved by the State Board of Education for the preparation of speech-language therapists
  • Minimum qualifying score(s) on the area examination(s) required by the State Board of Education
  • Valid South Carolina teaching certification


Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of proper use of speech and language testing/screening equipment and materials. Ability to diagnose student speech and/or language impairments. Knowledge of and ability to implement 21st century instructional methods for developing individualized therapy plans, materials, and activities which stimulate speech and/or language skill development. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various therapy activities and situations. Knowledge of and ability to implement counseling methods necessary for handling student problems and recommending appropriate interventions as needed. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students and their parents, district staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Ability to demonstrate high level application of technology devices in the performance of daily activities. Ability to operate general office equipment. Knowledge of proper maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities.

Working Conditions:

Conducts duties in classroom environments with no significant exposure to adverse environmental factors. Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to twenty-five pounds. Occasional travel is required; possible overnight travel required.

Responsibility:

Supervises students in classroom and other instructional settings. Responsible for materials and supplies budget (if applicable). Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
