The Linux System Administrator is responsible for the technical design, planning, implementation, and performance tuning and recovery procedures for mission-critical enterprise systems. As a technical expert in system administration, the role involves recommending the design and configuration of operating systems and system applications, investigating and analyzing the feasibility of system requirements, and developing system specifications. The role also includes identifying methods and solutions and providing project leadership to ensure a high level of service to departmental customers.

Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Perform regular maintenance of Linux systems, specifically RHEL 8 & 9, and Ubuntu.
  • Collaborate with developers and QA groups for our point-of-sale system.
  • Experience with Hypervisors (Hyper-V and VMware) is required.
  • Support the installation and build-out of applications on RHEL systems.
  • Install new or upgrade existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, and storage in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Understand networking concepts, protocols, and services, including TCP/IP, DNS, and Firewalls.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify and resolve issues to ensure high availability and performance.
  • Write or modify scripts to resolve performance problems and automate systems administration tasks.
  • Maintain and write system documentation.
  • Demonstrate solid troubleshooting and diagnostic skills; assist in identifying and resolving problems.
  • Understand and implement security best practices and measures on Linux systems, handle event investigations, and enforce compliance.
  • Provide monitoring and primary response for IT-related security incidents and violations.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Manage and maintain Red Hat Satellite Server.
  • Manage and maintain Ansible.
  • Support DevOps group with Docker and Podman.
  • Support DevOps group with Nginx and Apache servers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Configuration Management tools.
  • Experience with Red Hat Identity Management (IDM).
  • Basic understanding of AIX.
  • Knowledgeable about IBM Hardware (Power 8, Power 9, Power 10).
  • Knowledge of storage technologies, such as RAID, SAN, and NAS.
  • Familiarity with database administration (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL).
  • Understanding of web servers and related technologies (e.g., Apache, Nginx).

Span of Control

  • No direct or indirect reports.
  • Follows specific, detailed instructions.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 2 years of related professional experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with Unix/Linux administration.
  • Experience in developing and implementing large-scale, complex, highly available infrastructure architectures that support critical business applications.
  • Experience with monitoring tools (SolarWinds is a plus).
  • Thorough understanding and experience with computer-based systems and associated networking architectures.
  • Experience with large complex projects, Linux and/or other Unix systems, SAN, security compliance (SOX, PCI, NIST), and 2+ years of experience with RHEL in a virtualized environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Willingness to work irregular shifts when needed and provide on-call coverage in a 24/7 environment.
