Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Plant Project and Capital Engineering Manager to join our Ashland Specialty ingredients G.P business at our Hopewell, VA. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Project and Capital function. This position will report to the Plant Manager.


The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Preparation and execution of capital projects to provide new assets for all areas of the Hopewell Plant.
  • Will be an active member of the Project Team throughout the total life of projects.
  • Responsible for the initial project preparation including justification and safety analysis, the detailed design, either directly or through supervision of contract engineers and assuring compliance with codes and Ashland standards.
  • Follow through the detailed design to preparation of bid packages and selection of contractors/vendors to install the new facilities.
  • Responsible for the supervision of construction forces assuring a safe and workable installation. Once construction is completed, this person will be an active member of the team to commission and start-up the new facilities.
  • Be a positive contributor to the safety and environmental programs of the Hopewell plant.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • BS in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or Civil engineering.
  • A minimum 10+ years in Project Engineering or Project Construction in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Proven performance success with cost estimating, budget preparation, cost control and scheduling for capital projects.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects concurrently and work in a team environment.
  • Multiple years of experience in managing large dollar projects.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, with various and relatable software.
  • Strong familiarity with building codes, safety and OSHA regulations for construction and general industry.
  • Material handling, both dry and liquid, packaging equipment and process automation experience.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • Experience working in a union environment.
  • Lean manufacturing and good manufacturing practices (GMP) experience.
