Description
The Organ Referral Specialist isResponsible for management of organ referrals from referring hospitals, donor chart review through electronic medical record (EMR) access, logistics support, facilitating organ allocation (kidneys & pancreas), receiving organ import offers and maintaining communication between the organ procurement team, hospitals, transplant centers, professional colleagues, and the public.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
DONOR COORDINATION
- Manages and documents organ referral calls from referring hospitals to evaluate potential donors, answer questions, and develop a plan for action with the Administrator on Call (AOC), the Family Services Coordinator (FSC), and the Organ Procurement Transplant Coordinator (OPTC)
- Advocates to maintain the option for donation through collaboration with hospital staff and physicians.
- Collaborates with the AOC to determine a plan of action for following potential donor cases, deferral of non-eligible donor referrals or activation of staff to respond onsite to offer potential donor families the option of donation in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
- Performs notification and dispatch of onsite clinical staff including arranging all necessary transportation.
- Provides logistical support for the transportation of organs and associated samples through both ground and air.
- Screens potential donors with physician partners as requested by the AOC.
- Collaborates with the OPTC, OPT, and FSC staff to facilitate communications regarding organ/tissue suitability.
- Facilitates all aspects of kidney and/or pancreas allocation in coordination with MTN laboratory, OPTC and Administrator On-Call.
- Facilitates the allocation of organs for research purposes when appropriate.
- Facilitates the import of organs from outside the MTN service area, communicates with the accepting local transplant surgeon, MTN laboratory, and confirms transportation of the imported organ to the appropriate transplant center.
- Assists in management of kidney preservation pumps.
- Maintains Electronic Medical Record (EMR) access in MTN hospitals to assist with routine EMR reviews, obtaining additional information to determine donor suitability for both organ and tissue potential donors.
- Assists onsite staff by performing entry of donor EMR information into the MTN donor record.
- Serves as a clinical resource in the Donation Services Department (DSD) to evaluate potential tissue donors.
- Serves in a back-up capacity to offer organ donation by phone in situations when timing requires immediate action to prevent loss of opportunity to offer donation to the next-of-kin.
- Conducts work in compliance with established federal and state laws, AOPO and AATB standards, UNOS and FDA guidelines, CDC and MTN policies.
- Completes donor case follow-up and required quality assurance responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintains compliance with documentation practices and MTN Policies and Procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- RN, NREMT-P, RT or Bachelor's degree required or equivalent clinical work experience. Three or more years' clinical work experience in a critical care/emergency room setting strongly preferred.
- Ability to work a minimum of 36 hours per week.
- Must maintain a valid driver's license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy. Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines. Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.
- Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; demonstrated problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to speak and communicate clearly and accurately to convey information to MTN stakeholders in person or by phone; written documentation of relevant information in a professional manner.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
- Possess ability to operate telephones, computers and surgical equipment.
- OSHA Category II - Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties. Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
- Home internet and wireless phone access may be required.
