JOB SUMMARY:

Act as a patient ambassador and interpreter to facilitate cross-cultural communication with health center staff who do not share Mixteco and Spanish as a common language. Assist with Spanish language translations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Contribute to a welcoming and culturally sensitive environment for patients by quickly acknowledging their presence upon entry, smiling, direct eye contact, and taking a moment to make a connection.

- Assist patients with electronic registration at check-in, written eligibility, and completion of healthcare documents.

- Assist patients with appointment scheduling and referrals both internally and with external providers.

- Provide accurate Mixteco-English-Spanish interpretation services between health center staff and patient as needed during all aspects of a patient's health care visit and post-care test/lab results

- Help facilitate continuity of care by coordinating pre and post-follow-up visits and referrals.

- While interpreting, convey the intent of the speaker, understanding that many idioms and slang terms do not translate exactly between languages. Note cultural differences and nuances and consult with providers to explain concepts when a direct translation does not exist.

- Collaborates with the medical team including doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff to support positive patient outcomes

•Serves as an advocate to ensure patient's needs are being met and understood by healthcare staff

•Provide unbiased and non-judgmental interpretation, in a culturally appropriate manner, preserving confidentiality, without allowing own views to interfere.

- Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with federal and state HIPAA privacy laws.

- Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Ability to communicate clearly in both written and verbal capacities in English and Spanish and verbal capacity in Mixteco.

- Ability to clearly relay ideas across cultures.

- Experience working as an interpreter preferred.

- Experience working in a healthcare setting preferred.

- Basic understanding of linguistics and different cultures

- Consistently greet and interact with clients & visitors in a warm friendly manner providing a positive patient experience.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

- High school diploma or equivalent.

- Proficiency in Mixteco, English, and Spanish

- One (1) year of Customer Service experience.

- One (1) year of health care background preferred.

- Experience assisting non-English speakers with translation and interpretation services preferred.

- Obtain certification in translating/ interpreting within 6 months of employment.

- Must be computer literate including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, internet navigation, email, and instant messaging.

- Familiarity with electronic health records or constituent record management systems is a plus

Planned Parenthood California Central Coast's (PPCCC's) compensation philosophy supports the organization's mission,vision, and values. Each position has a salary based on market value and the organization's pay levels. The starting salary for this position is 22.76/hour with the opportunity for advancement.As part of our commitment to pay equity, PPCCC does not negotiate salaries.

Pay Differential: $2,00 trilingual Spanish/English/Mixteco differential pay is offered upon passing the language assessment test.
