Description

The Richmond Behavioral Health Authority is seeking a PRN Authorization Technician to join our Quality team Prior authorization is a process used by many health insurance companies to determine whether they will reimburse a prescribed procedure, service, or medication. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Health Care Data Quality Supervisor.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for processing pre- and reauthorizations for clinical services requiring precertification
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of Medicaid/Medicare and Managed Care Organizations (MCOs)
  • Verifying current insurance coverage through DMAS
  • Maintaining tracking of authorization requests/approvals and key authorizations into the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Performing intermediate administrative support work researching and identifying errors in client level data in the EHR which impacts monthly billing processing
  • Other duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of proper business English and spelling; ability to answer inquiries and assist the public in a courteous manner; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate personal computer and word processing software quickly and accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, MCO representatives, medical personnel, clients, and the public. The ideal candidate will be a hard-working and computer-savvy professional able to undertake a variety of office support tasks and work diligently under pressure. This individual must be comfortable working with a high degree of attention to detail and discretion, as well as incorporating new and effective ways to achieve better results.

Position Requirements

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED with coursework in business administration, data entry or related field; One year's experience providing administrative support in a healthcare setting including customer service experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience; and experience working in a Managed Care setting and/or medical office is preferred.

Physical Requirements

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
