Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the WIC Clinic Manager, the WIC Certifier is responsible for assessing pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under five years of age for eligibility to participate in the WIC program. Duties include but are not limited to performing anthropometrics and biochemical assessments, evaluating diet and health care needs, assigning a food package appropriate to the needs of the client, and providing education and referrals appropriate to the risk criteria identified.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Completes certification and recertification of eligibility for WIC services, using PHOCIS software and following Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) WIC Service guidelines.
  2. Obtains weight, height, and blood specimen for analysis of hemoglobin level. Accurately documents and assesses the results.
  3. Interviews clients; assesses dietary intake; supports breastfeeding and issues breast pumps when needed.
  4. Issues WIC benefits and explains purpose of the WIC program.
  5. Evaluates nutrition status of individuals and provides basic nutrition education. Refers high nutrition risk participants to clinic Nutritionist for follow up.
  6. Facilitates group nutrition classes for pregnant and post-partum women, infants, and children.
  7. Makes referrals to other health professionals and programs.
  8. Maintains records and prepares reports.
  9. Maintains inventory of breastfeeding supplies for clinic.
  10. Cleans equipment, including multi-user breast pumps, restocks supplies in lab rooms/office, and orders office, laboratory, and breastfeeding supplies as needed.
  11. Answers and routes telephone calls, reviews and responds to all work-related electronic communication.
  12. Demonstrates Variety Care core values in everyday work and assists with meeting WIC program goals.
  13. Supports Variety Care's accreditation as a Patient Centered Medical Home and our commitment to provide care to all Variety patients that is Safe, Effective, Patient Centered, Timely, Efficient, and Equitable. Provides leadership and works with all staff to achieve the goals of the "Triple Aim" of healthcare reform-to improve the experience of care, improve health outcomes, and decrease healthcare costs.

Requirements, Special Skills, or Knowledge:
  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Basic knowledge in computer data entry and/or word processing.
  3. Basic organizational skills and initiative.
  4. Experience handling confidential information.
  5. Experience working in a multi-faceted, fast-paced environment.
  6. Experience handling stressful situations and difficult participants.
  7. Experience following oral and/or written instructions.
  8. Ability to secure WIC Certifier certification required within 6 months of employment, if needed.
  9. Experience working well with people of diverse socioeconomic/cultural backgrounds.
  10. Expect computer keyboarding as well as experience taking notes on a regular basis.
Preferred Requirements, Special Skills, or Knowledge:
  1. Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  2. Two years of experience in a health clinic or related organization or specialized training in medical services or nutrition.
  3. Experience or training with the WIC program.
  4. Experience working in a professional office environment with the ability to communicate one-on-one, via telephone, and in group setting.
  5. Comfortable using virtual technology like Teams or Zoom.
  6. Experience in at least one the following areas:
    1. Nutritionist
    2. Certified WIC Nutrition Therapist (CWNT) or Competent Professional Authority (CPA) such as a Physician, Physician's Assistant, Registered Nurse, Registered Dietitian, or Licensed Practical Nurse
    3. WIC Clerk with 2 years' experience.
