Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Plaza and Westport Sr. Manager, manages daily operations at the Branch Library. Assists the assigned Manager with the operation and maintenance of the branch and assumes the responsibilities of the Branch Manager in their absence to provide quality library service to all Library patrons. The position also works closely with outside organizations to deliver programs and build partnerships. The position provides excellent customer service demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively with people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, ability level, or background.

Other Things You Should Know

Full-time exempt position. Starting salary is $49,137 plus excellent benefits. The basic schedule is Mon-Thurs 9-6 and Friday 8:30-5:00 with some Saturdays required: additional hours will sometimes be required at this or another branch. Position open until filled.

Job Duties

Schedules staff, substitutes, and volunteers while monitoring attendance to ensure adequate staffing. Approves time sheets for assigned staff. Resolves issues and notifies Plaza and Westport Sr. Manager of impact to services or personnel.

Supervises assigned staff to ensure productivity and quality of service.

Maintains safe, secure, and inclusive environment, completing incident reports and making management aware of trends and issues.

Facilitates basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: charges and discharges library materials; issues library cards; collects fees; clears patron records; explains and interprets circulation and conduct policies and procedures; pulls unclaimed reserves.

As the Westport Branch is a facility designated by the Department of State to accept and process United States Passport applications, serves as the Passport Facility Manager. Assures smooth operation of the function, orders passport supplies, answers questions (if any) from the Department of State, and trains new staff in the processing function.

Performs circulation and collection maintenance control duties: maintains and troubleshoots self-check machines, schedules a regular shelf reading schedule, and monitors Library displays and merchandising

Works with other Library departments to facilitate access to services and information.

Schedules and provides public training sessions in the use of Library resources, computers, digital devices and other resources and equipment available to patrons. Assesses the need of such trainings and adjusts to best suit the community's need.

Provides research assistance to patrons using all resources available in the Library as well as accessing outside resources.

Provides reading, viewing, and listening advisory assistance to library patrons.

Works with the Plaza and Westport Sr. Manager and engages community partners to develop programs and provide services to meet the needs of existing patrons and to attract new patrons.

Participates in hiring, training, and evaluating staff to ensure the Library staff can give the highest quality service.

Ensures effective, courteous working relationship with all Library patrons; resolves patron issues using the Library's customer service policy.

Performs office tasks such as preparing and submitting deposits, ordering supplies, and other organizational tasks.

Working knowledge of current library practices.

Demonstrated Intermediate computer skills.

Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.

Able to work at any KC Public Library location.

Meet guidelines of National Passport Office and maintain Passport Agent Certification.

Ability to speak and understand English is required. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred, fluency will be more highly preferred. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.

Minimum qualifications include a master's degree in library/information science or equivalent combination of education, work experience with emphasis on public service, and life experience.
